Last week when I stopped to pick up some off-road diesel, as the guy was finishing up with my yellow fuel cans, a school bus pulled up to the off-road pump, and there went the dyed fuel into the yellow bus... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Got me wondering if there are exemptions for road use. Do school buses normally use the dyed fuel? Now I wonder about state vehicles...for road maintenance and so on.

It kind of makes sense, but it never occured to me that this would be common or even done at all.

It makes sense for them (any tax-funded organization) to run tax-exempt fuel, but not high sulfur fuel.

Diesel fuel cans are yellow so is the school bus, I guess it is logical to assume that anything yellow can use off road diesel.

If its red your dead. Unless the school bus was owned by a government agency, they still pay the taxes. If it is a government agency that owns the school bus, then the taxes would be deducted from the bill for the fuel and an exemption certificate would be given to the vendor. I know of no exemption to the "red is dead" regulation. Not even for government vehicles, but when is the last time you saw a cop give another cop a ticket??????

Not to turn things political, but doesn't the government always exempt themselves every time they pass a new law?

Many of the municipalities around here have their own gas pumps for the local government vehicles, which they possibly don't pay tax on?

I assumed the government doesn't pay taxes to themselves on their own vehicles...

Gee...so are our Penn DOT vehicles...! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It's starting to become clearer now... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've no idea who owned that school bus, but possibly the school district, rather than a contractor?

Bill interesting question ! Just up the road from me is a piece of property that was up for sale . When it wouldn't perk for a sand mound the sale fell through . The local bus (school ) company bought it and put up a garage facility . It has water and toilets . They don't even have a mound system . From what I can tell it's conventional septic . seems kind of odd to me to say the least . John

All the schools in my state, use off road diesel in their buses. This makes sense, because the schools are tax exempt.

The GC I work for does quite a bit of municipal work.. city, county, and state. In all these cases.. we are issued a blanket tax exemption permit.. Therefore we don't charge taxt on any sales to them. Makes sens for a tax authority to run tax exempt. ( this is florida.. etc.. might be different elsewhere.. )
