Off road Diesel versus #2 home heating oil

That's odd. The receipt for the oil in the tank downstairs says Home Heating Oil, dyed. Maybe you should send a letter to my supplier and straighten him out.

You want to play word games, play with somebody who actually cares.

Don't go away mad.

I don't play games.

I'm not mad. And I'm probably not going away. I just don't consider debating semantics to be particularly entertaining. Please point out where I endorse putting LSD or high sulfur fuel in engines requiring ULSD.

It is not word games or semantics.

#2 heating oil is the question of the thread, unless I've completely missed the point. Some on the forum insist #2 heating oil is no longer produced. Those same people tell others it is safe to use #2 heating oil in their tractors, giving as their reason -- that it is the same as off road diesel. THAT is not true.

My only concern is for the OPs engine, and others who may read the thread.

Like you, I could care less about arguing. I just don't want to see anyone ruin their motor for the reason of false info. The OP is in mass and vt. #2 heating oil is supplied in these areas. It is different from off road diesel.

Keep in mind the OP has a John Deere 850, which WAS BUILT BEFORE ULSD WAS INTRODUCED.

Take a cup of what is in the heating oil tank and compare it to the Diesel from a gas station. Can you tell the difference? Smell, Viscosity, Oiliness, etc?

How does the Old JD seem to like it?

The OP's pre-emissionized injection pump will probably last longer running high sulfur fuel (if available) than ULSD.
Over & out.

My early posts in the thread addressed the issue of tractor age vs fuel type. I figured the OP would know how old his tractor was, and could take it from there.

As I pointed out, the fuel distinction is still important for other readers, both now and in the future, looking for fuel options for their tractor.

Happy tractoring.

My suggestion is if you're going to run ultra low sulfur heating oil in a diesel engine I would inquire about if any additives were added to improve the heating oil's lubricating properties. If unsure I would add something to it for peace of mind. But it's your engine, do as you wish. Just remember, while we can debate if off road diesel and heating oil are the same or not there is no debate that the refining process of removing sulfur from diesel also reduces the amount of lubricity as well.

Wow, didn't expect this question to take on so much. Ya my little deer is a 850 (yanmar) diesel engine from the 1980's. All I was hoping to do is be able to pump fuel from my heating oil tanks rather than haul 5 gal. cans to and from the gas station. I can get Off road Diesel at the gas station and on road as well, however the guy that supplies the off road, pumps so little of it, that it is nearly the same cost as over the road at the larger gas station. We will be opening our place in the North East Kingdom of Vermont next week, at witch point I guess I will see about getting a small amount Diesel (off road) delivered when we top off the fuel oil tanks. At which time I'll report back as to what our fuel supplier has to say.

Go right ahead & do just that. If it is clean enough to burn in your furnace, the tractor will get along just fine.

I asked my fuel guy if off road and heating oil was the same and he told me Yes. Now I don't know if it is or not but I figured he would know. Maybe he was pulling my leg.
