Off Road Diesel

I live in North Texas - I have a small tree farm, I still work full time off the farm but I was wondering what I have to do to get off road Diesel for my tractor (nothing else) the tractor will not be on any road just my land.
Questions are: Is there a permit required? If yes where do I get the permit? also is there a place I can pick up the Diesel in the North Texas area? As I will be only gettin about 30 gallans at a time. I am not a big time Diesel buyer but I am looking for any way of cutting costs and over a year this will add up.

Anybody can buy off-road diesel. No permit is needed. You just cannot use it in your registered car or truck on the open road.

I am sure one of our Texas residents can point you to a local distributor.

Sounds like you're farther north than I am, but I get mine at Dillard Feed & Seed in Weatherford. No permit needed, just bring a container and pump it in.

In Smith County, I had to have a tax ID number to get off road diesel. I don't know if this is a county rule or state wide.

I went to the tax office and told them I had land that I planned to sell timber from and needed a tax ID number. I filled out the papers and got the certificate.

If you do this, use a fake phone number because every credit card salesman in the state will call you to set up a new account.

Once you have the tax number, they will require you to fill out a form at the station, then you buy what you need.

I bought 40 gallons at a time until I built my fuel trailer, now I buy 200 gallons at a time.

To deliver it, they required 300 gallons at a time, or they charge an additional $50 delivery fee. This was true with two different suppliers, but could be totally different in your area.

You can ask just about anybody you see on a tractor where they get their off road diesel. Thats how I found out about my locations.

I'm saving around .35 cents per gallon.

Just stop by your nearest wholesale fuel distributor and ask them. The laws are always changing. I never used dyed fuel at all, but used to buy regular #2 diesel from my local distributor and there was a form I had to fill out and sign the first time, then the distributor had to keep that form on file. Then they changed the law and I had to mail a form (application) to Austin and they mailed one back to me, and I continued to buy the regular diesel. The form I had to sign said that I'd never buy more than 10,000 gallons in a month, never use any of it in a vehicle on the road, never sell any, etc. But I know the law has changed again and I think that now you can only buy the dyed fuel without paying the taxes.

Bird, you reminded my "WHY" I went down to get a tax ID number.

Starting in Jan of 2004, you could no longer turn in your diesel fuel receipts and get a refund for the tax you paid on fuel used on the farm.

Before then, all you had to do was save those reciepts and claim the amount you paid in tax on the fuel you bought. The state of Texas would then refund you that amount.

They don't do that anymore, and the only way to get tax free diesel is to buy the red stuff.

That you might have to ask someone over there, We have it here because of the large amount of OFF road work that is done. But I bet one call you your local/area ag rep can answer that.

I just get mine at the local Cenex feed store. Had to pay cash at first but the owner put me in for a card to authorize off-road purchase outside regular working hours.
I think Cenex is located this side of the Mississippi so there should be locations all over Texas.
