Does anyone use offroad deisel in their JD 2520? The owners manuals says not to use high sulfur, but I was having my 50 hour service done and the tech said that most people are using off road.

It's my understanding that offroad diesel is regular diesel (with dye) that jsut is taxed differently for farm use. I don't think the sulfur content is any different.

There are different sulfur contents. I am currently using #1 low sulfur offroad diesel. Low sulfur is any level below 500ppm. Standard offroad diesel is usually above 500ppm.

The times they are a changing, and so are the types of diesel fuel that are available. The new fuels have been discussed in detail in the Oil/Lube and Fuel forum. The bottom line is that unless your distributor has access to some LSD (<500 ppm of sulphur) fuel, your off road will be ULSD. LSD is only being refined by smaller refiners and will soon (before the end of the year) become scarce and probably more expensive. Those that live in California have no choice, all you can buy starting Sept 1 is ULSD, on or off-road.

Off-road diesel is dyed and there are no taxes applied (i.e. the ~$.40 per gallon here in MN). You usually have to buy it in quantity (100+ gallons) - at least around here - it's not available at a normal fuel station "pump".

Other than the dye, it's the same fuel as you'd buy at a regular pump.

My dealer puts it in all the tractors on the lot. I have ran regular diesel and off-road through my 990 and it runs fine with either.

cast: I located a fuel distribution company that has dyed diesel at the pump. One is a low speed pump, the other has a larger diameter nozzle which won't fit a can for high speed delivery.

I went in the office and got on a contract with them. Although I buy only 5 - 12 gallons of diesel every two or three months, they are happy to sell it. I use a plastic card to access the pump system and buy what I need and get billed on my credit card automatically. I save 40 - 50 cents per gallon.

I found them by calling around and asking smaller construction companies where they buy their off road fuel.

I know I don't save more thean $20 -$40 a year, but it's also the principle of the thing, paying road tax and sales tax on top of road tax for fuel I don't burn on the road.

Ah, and being in California you are only using ULSD.

My distributor here has the same deal for customers who purchase a lot of off-road fuel. The key or card system gives them 24/7 access to fuel.

In California there is no difference between on road and off road diesel fuel because they are both ULSD.

Would you pay 40 cents a gallon to get the red out?
