There are different sulfur contents. I am currently using #1 low sulfur offroad diesel. Low sulfur is any level below 500ppm. Standard offroad diesel is usually above 500ppm.
How does adding the red dye change the sulfur cintent ???

Off-road diesel is dyed and there are no taxes applied (i.e. the ~$.40 per gallon here in MN). You usually have to buy it in quantity (100+ gallons) - at least around here - it's not available at a normal fuel station "pump".

Other than the dye, it's the same fuel as you'd buy at a regular pump.

150 Gallons here for a special delivery trip-No Min. if they are already in the area.

Since I just recently purchased my tractor, I'm new to diesel. I've filled my 5 gallon can three times, at two different stations. One of the three fill-up I got dyed fuel, the other two were clear. I don't remember which station had the dyed. (Last can came from Speedway and is clear.)

I paid $2.959-3.049/gallon for all three cans.

Are you sure the fuel was dyed red?

Dyed fuel should have been at least 23 to 24 cents LOWER in price than the clear fuel. It looks like you were ripped off by one of those stations. Had you used the dyed fuel in a normal vehicle you could have been in big trouble if you ever got stopped and tested.

MAD:

I burn whatever fuel is sold, there is no choice. In California, dyed diesel should be .14 + .18 or .32 cents per gallon cheaper than highway diesel plus or minus a few cents per gallon in dealer profit margin.

It runs the same, but the dyed diesel makes a bigger mess when it's spilled.

In Colorado, dyed off road diesel is cheaper since you don't pay road taxes on it. I've burned both in my JD 4200 with no noticeable difference.

My local CO-OP/Ace Hardware is less than 5-miles from me, and they are happy to sell a few gallons at a time to fill the Jerry cans. I'm a member, so I get a little bit of a dividend at the end of the year on all purchases I make there.

As long as the manufacturer doesn't care, save your $$$ and get the off-road stuff for your off road vehicles.

I must have the deal of the century.

I just pull into the local Chevron and get my 5 gallon tank filled. I go inside to pay and tell them it is off road for my backhoe. They subtract the road tax from the cost and I pay the reduced bill.

One of the issues I see with worrying about this is that I might use 5-10 gallons per week. I can spend a lot of money on gas for my pickup and driving all over the place to save $2-4 a week on offroad fuel. It just isn't worth it until I start using a lot more diesel.

They probably are not subtracting the federal tax, just the state tax as the federal tax is paid at the bulk distribution plant and is only deducted thru your annual IRS tax filing.

Plus you are only using ULSD starting today. You have no other fuel choice in CA.
