Offgrid Genset Transfer switch

Sorry, I got behind.

Only cursory consideration of going underground back when we started but was told it would be even more expensive so I disregarded. 20 years of hind sight and maybe I should have considered a bit more. During that time I ran about 350ft of underground service from house to our cottage.
Back initially I didn’t even consider to ask if I could doing any of it, like the trenching, myself.
But reality, I still would have eventually added solar and likely a less robust system, so I’m currently happy.
I have for over 40 years looked into living off grid and I appreciate folks like you who post about their systems and how they have solved problems. There is no way I would go off grid now but I still like learning about how different folks do so. I did dig all the trenches on my property for power, phone, and water about 20 years ago. But the power is only 250 volts so the insulation on the buried cables is stressed way less than the 17,000 volts running on the power poles running down my street. It's interesting to look at the wires on the poles that are smaller in diameter that the wires that run from the transformer and go underground to my property. Of course it's because of the very high voltage on the wires feeding the transformer.

A lot of towns around here, especially the suburbs, have ordinances requiring all new work to be underground. It seems the high voltage transmission lines are the only real exception.

I’ve lost track of whether there was ever a question in this thread?

Does there have to be one?
No, there doesn’t. I live off grid both at home and on a boat, so have a reasonable amount of experience with this. But I still seem to be missing the point of the thread. But that’s fine, carry on.
