My tractor is 42 HP at the PTO with one set of rear remotes. I have established trails and will need to do yearly cutting to keep the brush from encroaching on the trails and fence lines. Any recommendations for a flail mower that has the most offset to the right possible via hydraulics? I’m looking for something with a cutting width of around 70”.

I have a 78" ditch bank flail it is the maximum for my Branson 8050 that tips the scales at over 11,000 pounds, that mower can give a person some pretty good pucker moments.

I wouldn't even recommend anything more then a 56" for a 4000 pound tractor and that may still be to much for your size tractor.

Lou - as I look at the pic you posted - the full 78 inches of the flail is offset - correct??

Just looking at that pic makes me pucker.

An orchard and vineyard shredder mower will provide you with the most side shift but as your mule has only one remote and not very heavy to counteract the over center forces created by the mowers movement it would not work.

The most off set is going to depend on the flail mowers actual total width and how much horsepower it requires.

Del Morino offers the Funny Top 158 model with mechanically adjustable side shift with pins and has a 62 inch cutting width.

The full side shift adjustment pushes the mower fully right with a measurement of 47 inches past the centerline of the tractor with 15 inches of cutting width to the left of the centerline of the tractor when it is adjusted 47 inches to the right. This mower will work for your needs.

The Maschio FURBA 180 is mechanically offset adjustment like the Del Morino funny top 158
and would work with your mule as well.

Yes, it can be, it will swing in behind the tractor and then out just a bit past the outside of the tires.
I can actually mow the full width of the mower outside the tires track. That has most of the mowers 1900 pounds off to the side of the tractor which will make her sway and bounce at times. when the mower is on flat fields and the rear roller is touching and supporting the mower it's not bad at all, but when holding the entire mower in the air when swung out over a bank it is a bit touchy.

To the original poster, the mower you listed the Nova BCRM 175 is lighter then my unit but your tractor is less then half the weight of mine with the mower at almost a 1000 pounds that is a lot of weight hanging off the side when it is in the air. I would say that the 155 with it's cutting width of 61"would be a better fit then the 68" of the 175 model but you don't have to extend the mower all the way out when working it.

Thanks for the followup explanation Lou. That is really a lot of weight hanging out there. I don't have a mower. Thinking of getting one. Maybe the Rhino TW25 or TW35. NEVER something like you have.

My valley on my driveway has steep side banks. They go down twenty feet to the floor of the valley. My Rhino 950 rear blade will offset. It's specifically so I don't have to drive on the edge when plowing snow. One slip and it would be a whole lot more than just a wild ride.

I have this one on a 4000lb machine. Like Lou mentioned it rocks the tractor pretty good if extended in the air but is very manageable if one is aware.

The standard duty is likely a better choice for the lighter tractors with yours being 800 pounds compared to over 1900 for the heavy duty one like mine.
I also like that they have the over running clutch built into the machine to save the pto brake.

I don't know what my Kubota M6040 has. If I push the PTO engagement lever to the OFF position while going at 540 pto rpms - it takes the chipper a LONG time to spool down.

What I do when finished with the chipper. Lower the tractor speed to idle and then disengage the PTO. The chipper, obviously, spools down much quicker.

I agonized over a ditch bank flail's weight and width for my tractor. I ended up with a Del Morino Super Centurion 62", and I feel relatively comfortable with it in the fully offset position. It does get dicey when the tractor gets at maybe 5-10 degrees, but the whole purpose is to keep the tractor away from slopes or objects.

My Kubota L4060 cab has a bare weight of around 4000 lbs, configured weight of 6400 lbs with filled rears and loader. The mower comes in at 700 lbs.

I thought you wern't supposed to extend it to the side while its up in the air, only on or near the ground. But I don't own one so maybe I'm missing something.

I am considering one for mowing the extensive blackberry on the fencelines on our Oregon place. Either that or a boom mower, but that's even more dependent on tractor weight, and they mow less area.

I have mowed with mine in the upright position. It does work a bit on the finer light stuff but heavier brush seems to bend over then spring past without getting clipped. At 45 degrees elevated for clipping the banks it does well;
this is about a 45 elevated mowing, ........................... this is about 45 down mowing the opposite bank
mowing about 45-50 degrees up.jpg
mowing about 45 degrees down 2.jpg

with it all the way up the geometry has the leading edge to far out from the hammers and much of what I'd like to be clipping doesn't get cut.

I do have a boom arm unit which will do the vertical trimming much better but it is a pain to get all hooked up and is much slower cutting because it's only a 48" head.
