You are right it is called bonding. They connect the chopper and the workers directy to the high voltage lines (at least 115KV-230KV) so they have high voltage potenitial but are too far away from ground for an arc to complete the circut.

Many moons ago I worked for a company selling to the electric power industry. One of our customers was American Electric Power. At the time they had the highest voltage transmission line in the USA. It was a 765,000 Volt line. YES, 3/4 of a million Volts! The line ran from Indiana/Ohio to Virginia. They had a trolley car that ran on the lines. The line crew sat in the trolley and repaired the wire cable bundle while the system was engaged. The guy I was working with said most of the work they did was repair of the cable (wire) from bullet nicks.

I couldn't believe people would actually do this for for a living. It must have been possible to hold your arm out and get a corona off the tip of your finger. Jeeze, it gives me the shakes just thinking about it. I was so amazed by the whole idea of this, I forgot to ask how they got into the trolley while the line was engaged.

Yet another job on the long list of what I don't want to be when I grow up.
The other list is much shorter...retired. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How's that generator Dave? I almost made the meeting with you. I would have got lunch for you there in downtown Newcastle, all 200' of it. The sandwich shop is superb. Mark

Hmmm.......riding in a trolley on a energized 765,000 volt line? In years past, I've done some crazy things while under the influence of alcohol, but I can honestly say nothing this crazy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In about eighty six or so my father bought a used bucket truck that had been laid over on it's side. It was a C60 and we found out the stuff like the winshield and door glass was the same as that of the half tons.

The bucket was fiberglas and all that was on the truck was the side attached to the boom with about an inch of lip of the bottom still there.

It was PTO powered so the truck motor had to be running and it was a thirty six foot Holigan unit.

Before dad handed over the thousand dollars I put it through it's paces holding on with one hand while my toes hooked that bottom lip with some kind of enthusiasm and the other hand operating the controls.

It was fun.

After I built dad a steel cage bucket for it a friend of his wanted to try it out. He was almost wetting his pants as he went up and down. When he got it full up and was acting like a little girl on the tilt a whirl I changed the control from the bucket to the base.

He had no contol but I did. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif He got the ride of his life.

The only thing more fun than scaring the stuff out of yourself is to do it to someone else!
