Would a regular 1 ton pickup with the pickup bed converted to be able to dump or a slide in dump bed be an alternative?

The next size up would be a F450 Super Duty. A F600-700 Ford, Chevy C6500, Navistar 4700 would be 2.5 ton truck with dual wheels and 10' dump bed. The Ohio Auto auction is a good place to buy.

You can buy a brand new dump trailer that will have more capacity for less. It will also hold it's value longer.

The problem as spoken before is one tons are often mistaken for big trucks. They ain't.

You buy any three quarter ton pickemup that's considered a heavy duty one and your GVW (gross vehicle weight) is going to be eighty eight hundred to nine thousand pounds.

Compare that to buying any make's one ton and the biggest GVW you can get is eleven thousand. And add to that they share a lot of the same componets.

Sometime go by a dealer that specializes in work trucks. Check out the cab and chassis models. Look at the difference between the different sizes before they get their bed.

It'll make you suck in your breath when you look up in your mirror and see a dually with a dual tandem trailer in tow hauling a backhoe coming up fast. Having the motor to pull has nothing at all to do with having the truck to haul.

Actually, while BobinCols is right in the Ford line about the F-450 being the next step above the F-350 the rest of the information given is a bit flawed. Ford also makes the F-550 which fits (self-evidently) between the F-450 and F-650.

In the General Motors line the numbers work about the same way. After the C3500 comes the C4500, C5500 and C6500 increasing in GVW as the numbers increase.

That having been said, let me suggest something to you that I think will not only help you but should pleasantly surprise you. In the used marketplace, you should be able to buy a five year old class 6 dump truck (like a C-6500) for less money than a similarly equipped class 3 dump truck (like a C-3500) in comparable condition.

While this would seem to fly in the face of logic, it really doesn't. Here's the rationale. More people are more comfortable with the pickup-like cab, size and handling of a class 3 truck than with a class 6 truck.

Good luck with your search. I hope this helps. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I've noticed this as well. Bigger trucks are less in demand compared to 1-1.25 ton trucks. It's made me rethink my purchasing options if/when I get my biz started, and its made me make getting a CDL a priority. The bigger trucks have more license cost but I'll already have growing room built in for bigger machines if needed. Somthing else to consider with bed options is a dumping flat bed with removable sides. One can haul dirt, debris, or lumber on the same truck.

FYI, At work the other day, we loaded 2 different orders of drywall. The guy brought a F450 with 1.25 ton hauling weight. We put 67 sheets of 4x12 on. At 90lb. a sheet, thats a little over 3 ton! The next guy had a ryder 1 ton and we loaded over 100. (I didn't get the exact #) Again, at 90lb. a sheet, thats 4.5 ton!! So, when loading, know how much stuff weighs!!

Guys...
Thanks for the education,it really helps.I can learn a lot here before I start pounding the pavement...thats why I posted here and asked you guys 1st/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
I guess the reason the large used ones sell for a more resonable price than a smaller one is demand, just like the price of compact tractor versus a full size tractor...is demand.
I assure you any further questions I will ask here 1st...
Keep the info coming/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif!!!

Thanks again

Instead of buying a probably abused 1 ton why not buy a dump trailer? They can haul just as much as a 1 ton dump truck and around here they can be had for about $5k.

Scott,

There are some other long and somewhat argumentative posts here about what will and won't constitute the need for having a CDL so I don't want to restart anything about that here. What I do want to do is simply mention to you that there are a number of medium duty dump trucks on the market which DO NOT require you to have a CDL. You might want to check into those.

With one of those you could likely save money over a class 3 or class 4 truck WITHOUT getting commercial licensing AND have a lot more truck, too. Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

They better be careful. At chase-pitkin's last year they refused to load a friend's truck because they said it wouldn't be safe to drive and they didn't want him coming back with a lawsuit against them. (Apparently this has happened before to them.)

We had to let them deliver the stuff with a properly sized truck.

Just a thought....
