Oi Filter - Cheap

I was just reading a thread posted a few weeks old that contained a complaint that the Subaru oil filters for the PT-422 and PT-425 are very expensive from Power-Trac.

The Fram PH4967 is a recommended filter for the Subaru engines. It can be had for about $4 at home centers like Lowes and Menards. I also like the textured grip making it easy to change without a wrench.

Thought I would pass this along.

I would look at what micron level the Fram filters at and how long before it loads up and goes into bypass.
I consider filters cheap insurance. The few dollars between the OEM and aftermarket is not enough for me to skimp on a filter.

Nothing wrong with an aftermarket filter. But I'd use that fram number to cross reference to something a bit better. The PH line is not a good filter. The fram XG and TG are good though. As are wix and napa gold and pretty popular too

LD1 is absolutely correct, there are better filters out there, but these do work in a pinch and are very available. My point is still this. Do not let lack of OEM filter availability or the expense of said filter keep you from performing the periodic maintenance. Change the oil on time even if you have to use a lesser filter, rather than run long to get your "money's worth" from an expensive one.

Also, to make it easier to change oil, install an extension and threaded right angle fitting to the engine block so that you have a vertical cap directly over the access whole in the frame. (keep it short well short of protruding below the machine.) This makes changing oil a snap, eliminating yet another excuse for not doing it on time.

PT422 - 2800+ hours and still going strong.
