Oil accumulators on tractors

Have you really considered all this oil tank stuff? So if you want the oil tank full at engine shut off, what is going to keep the oil in the tank, and is the tank pressurized.
Does the tank have a one way check valve to keep oil in the tank, and what kind of valve is going to release the oil at the right moment? An electric dump valve would work here to release the oil.

I believe your best bet is to use a 12v gear oil pump to supply oil to the galleries, using the oil from the sump. Just run the pump for 30 seconds before engine start, to load up all the galleries, etc.

Pre lube/post lube pumps are very common on industrial engines for both the turbine and the engine itself. Lots of different ways to set them up. :D

Most will be programed into the start/stop cycle for the engine controller.:D

The chances are you will find these systems on some over the road tractors.:D

JJ, they use the engine oil pressure to fill the tank through a one way check valve.

A few seconds before cranking on start up, a electronic or manual valve is opened. Air pressure above the oil pushes the tank oil into the system. Lasts about 2-5 seconds.

Back to basics ... do any of you have a compression release on your tractors?

Cranking a few seconds with the compression released is a simpler way to get the oil light out before firing up.

California,
As far as i know,i do not have a comp.release on my engine.
I've tried cranking without activating the the glow plugs to build oil press. and
the engine starts before the light goes out.Darned Japanese engineers anyway!!!

J J,
Yes,an electric pump would be great, and do the job,but a electric pump is about 3 times what a oil accumulator tank costs,at least.

Not to mention more moving parts and increased piping.

I don't think the cost factor would be that much difference. By the tine you find a suitable container, mounting bracket, inlet check valve, and a solenoid dump valve, the cost will be high.

The oil in most cases is through the system at 30 to 40 psi in a couple of seconds. Are you going to release the oil in the upper galleries, or the lower section first. You have to consider that the engine is still coated by oil from the last shut down. Sure some specialty cars may have them, but I suspect a lot of the extra oil providers would have electric pumps on them. I believe that vehicles with turbo chargers would have electric pump to provide oil to the turbo charger bearings.

If one could prove that the pressured oil tank would extend engine life by X amount of hours, then it might be beneficial.

It is a project that can be done, and you might get satisfaction out of it, so work it up with pictures and let us know how it works out.

Willl,
When you mentioned "back flowing" the filter,i assume you are talking about the engine oil filter,is this correct? If it is,that would be a bad thing, something like backflushing a swimming pool filter.I guess technically
i would be pushing all the crap back down into the oil pump.Maybe i'm worrying too much.
Anyway, after much research and thought,i think the only right way to do this would be to install a remote oil filter mount for the oil filter and have a low resistance check valve mounted in the "pressure" side line. Then run your accumulator plumbing into this line after the check valve but before the engine. That way it supplys the engine with oil from the accumulator, but doesnt push any oil backwards into the oil filter or pump.Yeah,i think that would be the fix. And,after the engine starts, the pump would still be able to supply pressure to the accumulator.(and the engine,of course:D)
Now,where in the heck do i get a remote oil filter mount for a
