Has anyone found a price effective solution to buying filters that fit JD engines either on-line or elsewhere. I noticed that someone mentioned in a post that there was an oil filter sale at NAPA this week (or last) but I can't find anything on the NAPA web site for filters that fit JD or any other tractor for that matter.

Steve,

Will the savings really be that substancial that it is worth it? I'm sort of referring to the general post going on about brand loyalty. I try to support my dealer, and in turn I know I'm not skimping on my machines maintenance, in turn he has gone out of his way servicing my account. Just my .02

JDFanatic,
I have been doing the same thing with my dealer but in all honesty it is a bit of a pain to run down there every time I need a filter. I have 2 machines and have started thinking about buying in "bulk" which might make the cost savings a motivation to buy elsewhere.

You must change your filters allot. I look at buying filters as an opportunity to chat with the people at the dealership. They know me and always give me a great deal when I buy something big. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I will be using other filters now as the JD filter I just put on my 5320 has a big "made in Mexico" looking out at me. Not for long.

Steve,
Let Napa know the make and model of your tractor and they can easily look them up for you.
This is the #'s I found for a JD4310

Napa #'s
2985- out air filter
6438- inner air filter
3263- fuel filter
1586- hydraulic filter
1064- oil filter

Vince,

Thanks for the part numbers /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So I go to the NAPA site and the NAPA oil filter is $8.29 vs. $6.00 for the Deere oil filter /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif (And the Deere filter says "Made in Japan" so it's probably a Yanmar)
The NAPA fuel filter is $6.39 vs. $5.00 for the Deere fuel filter /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
NAPA was cheaper on the hydraulic suction filter by $20 ($44 vs. $24) but it's a 400 hour part and the savings works out to $0.05 per hour.
I'm not knocking NAPA, that's where ALL my automotive parts come from but for my Deere's the extra $$ is worth Deere's "stamp of approval" (Deere branded part) over the long haul. I expect my Deere's to be around way longer than my automotive transportation.

take 'em in the JD part numbers and they can cross over, or they can look up by tractor model. Now, would I rather go to JD and pay $35 for a filter? No. Farmers with $100k tractors are using these $5 filters, why shouldn't I? Let JD charge 1000% markup on someone else.

Several years ago, my brother-in-law bought a $5 NAPA filter for his 20-something thousand-dollar Caravan. It fit, but it was the wrong one. The engine light came on while my sister was driving it. She pulled right over, but the damage was done. Dodge blamed the filter, and NAPA offered them another $5 filter. My sister got stuck with the cost of a new motor. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm with "Greenrules", for the amount of times I change the filters and the difference in cost, I make a trip to the JD dealer once in awhile and stock up. I even use their oil and hyd fluid. While I am there I check out the new stuff and chat, That helps when you are trying to look something up or get answers.
