Hey folks, I got a gooseneck with 10k dexters with clear hubs. Is there any problem with filling the gear oil 1/4" more than the line? There's still about 3/4" till the filling hole. I have just been hearing that it could be disastrous if you overfill hubs slightly. Im starting to think that overfilling was a bad idea.

I would say the fill mark is there for a reason. I had oil filled front hubs on a Kenworth. Had a rubber plug in the center that made overfilling a non issue.

I run Lucas hub oil and fill them tell it runs out the rubber fill plug .

O and I hate oil bath axles I have two trailers with them and there the leak'n est things I ever seen . I like grease ones better !!!

But ya good fill it tell it runs out the cap . And I highly recommend the Lucas hub oil .

Would you overfill your engine oil? The fill mark is there for a reason.

Well folks. The oil level dropped down just right. I was supposed to fill them up, wait 20 mins and then fill them again since these are brand new hubs. However since I went over the line, the oil seeped into the hub and things look good now. Thanks for all replies.

RubenK. I have a trailer with the 7000# Dexter oil bath axles. I put them on new when the trailer was updated for larger equipment. It would ruin seals about every 8 months. I called Dexter to see if there was a different seal for it or what I was doing wrong. Every question I asked the lady, she would reply with "have you tried using grease?".So I got grease seales for these axles, cleaned and greased the bearings and havent had any more problems with the (oil bath) hubs. The first time you have a seal go bad put grease in them. lt190b

lt190b, I didnt know you could do that. I was told oil bath are designed to run cooler and grease wouldn't hold up well for 10k axles. So do I simply buy a new seal and pack the hubs with grease?

I agree Chris. I think overfilling would increase the chances of leaks. Otherwise they would have the fill line at the bottom of the plug hole.

I'd never heard the recommendation of changing to grease in a leaky oil hub. Anxious to see/hear the discussion about that.

RubenK. I thought the oil bath hubs were designed to run cooler too. probably long hauls they would but all my runs are in city stop and go driving. I figured that was the reason for the (oil) seal failure. I'm hauling the same equipnent, the same way, with grease instead of oil, with no (grease) seal failure. If you aren't having any problems, don't look for new ones

lt90b, I will keep you posted on the hubs. I have a 1200 mile haul coming up next week.
