I noticed that there are 2 yellow caps on the motor with a oil symbol on them,
One on top of the cyilinder head and one on the side down by the back of the motor.
Which one do I use to add the oil back into the motor after I drain out the oil? Does it matter? and Why?

I hav a CCY SC2450 tractor.

Without looking at my motor, my assumption is that the yellow cap on top of the engine is the fill cap. The cap on the side of the engine towards the back of the engine is the check cap. I would assume this would be like a car/truck engine where the fill cap is sometimes on the top of the engine and the check is on the side or front of the engine.

Looking at the attachment, are you referring to the dipstick?

I'll be possibly changing my oil this weekend. I have about 45 hours on it and ran over part of a bush stump and dented the transmission filter over the weekend. I checked to see if there was any leakage but didn't see any. I guess it's time to build my filter guard like I've been thinking about.

msb1766, I know what you're talking about. gtrippleb, he's not talking about the dip stick. There are two yellow caps on the engine with the oil symbol. One is directly on top of the cylinder head and the other is about mid way down towards the rear of the engine on the same side as the dip stick. The manual doesn't say anything about which one is the "right" one to use. Honestly, I would think the top one is the better choice so the new oil has a better chance to coat the parts as it travels down to the pan... though, in all reality, it probably doesn't matter.

On some diesel engines they put a second fill port lower down on the block. My New Holland manual stated that the second lower fill port should be used to assure the new oil went down to the lower portion of the block (pump location) ... because they experienced folks filling from the top port and the oil becoming trapped in the head area ........ resulting in "bad bearings" and resulting warranty work. It also emphasized that the dipstick should be pulled when filling to allow air into the system.

So would you say it might be a good idea to pour some oil in the lower port along with using the top port?

I have changed the tractor oil four times thusfar and utilized the instructed bottom port. I suspect that if you change the oil .... and then insert and check the dipstick to assure it is at the proper level in the crankcase ..... You must have oil where it needs to be.

From my sc2400 service manual

Adding Engine Oil
1. Make sure engine is level.
2. Remove oil cap (Figure 4-6, (4)).
3. Add indicated amount of engine oil at the top or
side engine oil filler port (Figure 4-6, (5)).

4. Wait three minutes and check oil level.
5. Add more oil if necessary.
6. Replace oil cap (Figure 4-6, (4)) and
hand-tighten. Over-tightening may damage the
cap.

I use the side because I find it more accessible.

I did not see that in the manual, thanks.
I tried to unscrew the oil filler cap on top of the motor but with the muffler and it being deep down in there there is not room to get your hand in there, there would no waY to open the top cap if the muffler was hot.

The text is from the service Tech manual not the operator's manual.

there are two places to put oil so they can use the same engine in different applications/units/tractors. it does not matter which one you use, so long as it's at the correct level when you're done.

Where were you able to download the service manual at? All I can find on Cubs website is for the parts and owners manuals.

I did the 50 hour service today, I went to the auto store and picked up 2 filter end cap wrenches one for the oil and one for the hydro filter, the few I already had didn't fit them. I was surprised that the filters were not on too tight, I was a little hard to get to the hydro drain plug with the backhoe on.
I filled the engine oil through the top filler cap, the side cap there was not too much room to get the funnel in there the loader arm was in the way. I was glad I got the oil filter end cap wrench the filter was tucked in there. I had a long funnel that I used to fill the hydro oil, if you don't have a long funnel you will need a piece of tubing to reach the fill/check hole. The hydro filter there was a lot of room around the filter.
The guy at the auto store asked if he wanted me to cross reference the oil; and the hydro filters to get a better price, I had brought the filters in with me to get the right size cap wrenches they were still in the boxes that said Cub Cadet/Yanmar on them. He said that the price for the oil filter is $11.00 and he could not find a hydro filter. I went home and checked the price I paid for the oil filter and I paid $5.62 from the dealer.

My Branson engine has two oil fill caps too and the dealer told me it's because the same engine is used for marine purposes and the lower fill would be handier in that application.
