How often should motor oil be changed? What is the best grade and weight of oil to use? I have a Yanmar 1510, Is there a U.S. equivlent oil filter for this model?

Change the oil every 100 hrs. Get an oil rated for diesel service. Shell Rotella is one or JD plus 50. You could use straight 30 weight in the summer and 10 or 20 weight in the winter but most people seem to be using 15w40. A good autoparts store can look up equivalent filters but some Yanmar users have decided that genuine Yanmar filters make sense. You can order them in advance from most of the dealers listed in the Dealer List thread. It is easy to keep a set on hand for when you need them. The original Yanmar Air filter was cleanable which was a good thing 'cause they are a little expensive but they do work better than some.

A company called sooner sales ( soonersales.com )
'rolls-their-own' air filters for yanmar for about 1/3rd of the price. This in mind... I don't even attempt to clean these filters.. when they look dirty, I just replace them. The factory yanmar filters are nicely built though.. I have ordered from leonard schaffer.... they are washable as pointed out.. and a bit pricey... but hey.... look what you can do with your tractor...

We advise changing oil and filter every 50 hrs on most of the smaller Yanmars. The oil capacity is only 3 to 4 qts and without a thermostat some never get hot enough to burn out fuel or other contaminates.
