Oil DRAIN PLUG TORQUE

I'm a firm believer in using torque wrenches on everything.
My advice to the OP is to call a dealer service department and find out, like i do when i need torque specs.

[QU this pointOTE=Ford850;4150280]Yep. And 1/4 after "snug". What exactly is "snug"?[/QUOTE]

When you visually see that the bolt is up against the pan that's snug usually for me .
it's finger tightening to this point then I put a wrench on it.. Can u tell me EXACTLY what a
Pinch of salt is :confused3:

Yes, a 1/4 turn beyond 'snug' could be too much for an aluminum pan with a steel bolt. So if pan won't hold a magnet, then go 1/8 turn beyond finger tightened by human, no gorillas allowed. use only a 6" box wrench no ratchets or breaker bars allowed.

Snug is: secure - https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=what is snug

Pinch of salt: smaller than a teaspoon full, what fits between a human forefinger and a thumb, see note re: gorillas.

I could not have said it more "accurately", "exactly" what I thought, you are "spot on" with science behind us how could anybody make a mistake :confused2: just "joshin ya".... Seriously - Have a safe day out there with your MACHINES

Tighten until stripped and back off 1/4 turn..

Your only trying to hold the liquid in the pan in, which ISN'T under pressure. You're NOT trying to hold the engine together. Go lightly on the torque.

DEWFPO

Wise advice here.

This is right because plugs are a "seat of the pants" thing that is done by either feel or torque wrench. Experience teaches how tight that tight actually is and if one is a newbie it's better to start with a torque wrench than guess it wrong.

Best answer and probably spoken from experience. screw up once and you will forever know how tight "tight" is.

Good thread for lots of people.

That is what I usually do.. :D

Funny story: I was replacing the side window glass in my 1978 Grenada.. You can tell this story happened a long time ago.. anyway I was tightening the retaining bolt that goes thru the hole in the glass and holds the glass to the raising mechanism. Just exactly how tight should that bolt be? Well, the first one I tightened until I hearda bang sound and the glass disappeared right before my eyes. One second it was there, and the next second it was gone.

I procured the vacuum cleaner and vacuumed up all of the window glass bits now lying on the bottom of the door.

On the second window glass I purchased, (that was the last one they had on hand), I tightened it a bit less, Uh, sort of "snug" plus a bit more, but not "tight". That seemed to work. Lesson learned.

Oh, so it's 'gonna be a case of who did the dumbest tightening story, eh? I can top yours, KOua!
I tried to drill a hole in one of the old style corner vent windows on an old Volvo so I could bolt in the newer type latch that went threw the hole in the updated windows, when they upgraded from a glued on/falls off latch. I did this on the parkay floor of my then girlfriend's apartment, 'cause I couldn't get enough pressure on the glass with the drill tip at the dining table.:confused3:

Can't remember if I got the hole through, but I'll never forget the sound of the glass exploding a few minutes after I finished whatever it was I thought I was doing to the tempered glass!:duh:

I think if only for a bigger drill, or freezing the glass first, I could have made it!:confused2:
Never did get to snug up that bolt.

Regarding actual drain pan bolts, the only bolts I found loose on my DK-35 Kioti, were the 2 oil drain bolts. They are steel on a 'double' aluminum pan sections. I checked with my dealer and he said definitely do not overtighten the bolts or they'll be replacing the pan for me. They omitted mentioning what overtightened would look like, but now that I mention it, they musta' meant 1/4 turn past stripped out! When I did the first oil change those bolts were barely beyond finger tight when I went to remove the oil. I very carefully tightened them just a smidge beyond snug.
