I bought an oil extractor from the DR folks. Best I can figure, it's a Pela (they sell MacKissic chippers this same way).

Needed the oil extractor to change the oil on my generator because I made a mess the last time just draining the old oil onto the ground. Worked great for that, plus for the oil on my air compressor. I didn't have to wrestle the compressor out of its spot to get the oil out of it.

Been trying it out on all my road vehicles and the tractor, to see how well it works vs. removing the drain plug. WORKED GREAT ON THE 4010. Nary a drop came out via the drain plug. So, in future, I won't bother weasling underneath to get it out.

Worked pretty well on my 4 cylinder Tacoma engine, too. Very little came out the drain plug. Still have to go underneath to get the beastly oil filter off. Didn't work on my VW Cabrio though, as the extractor hit an anti-splash baffle of some sort. Pity too, because the oil filter on it is accessible from the top.

Once I get off the 3 year free maintenance from the dealer on our 2010 Jetta TDI, I'll use the oil extractor on it. Its oil filter is up top, very similar to the very-easy-to-change one we had on our 1983 240D.
