oil filter 2010

Yes I apologize, I failed to notice that they were 2 different makes. NAPA and Fram. The only thing I was getting at is, the Yanmar filter was engineered to go on that tractor. Where as the Frams, NAPA's, wix's were not. No I don't specify a Motorcraft filter on my vehicles, because the crossover filters were also engineered to fit my Ford. Big difference in one that was meant to fit and one that "will fit". By the way, Yanmar is not close to me either, nor is any dealer closer than a 2 hour drive. But, one e-mail for parts request, and I have my filter in 2 days. Just my 2 cents worth.

Inspector,

Just out of curiosity, how do you know that a fram, napa, wix ect... filter was engineered for a specific vehicle when one filter often fits many makes and models. Has anyone compared a Yanmar oil filter to the other brands that are often put on a Yanmar to see what the differences are. If they look the same, thread the same, and the gasket mates the same, other than the internal filter design, which often varies from one grade of filter to another, what's to say that the other brand filters may not actually Filter the oil better than the Yanmar filter. I think only the manufactuers know how they are internally engineered. We would have to cut apart a bunch of different brands of filters to see how good they are actually working, I still stand on my point any new filter that fits properly is better than a old, used filter. I have not heard any evidence from anyone here that the OTHER brand filters don't fit properly. The fram filters that I have used on Yanmars fit properly and did not leak a drop, so at least I know they were sealed. Got no idea how well they filtered the oil, however the engine is still running strong and the oil did not appear to get prematurely dirty, so I guess it is not creating a major problem.

So, if it screws on and seals........it must be the right filter for the job. Hmmmm.. thought filters had internal parts that might make a tad bit of difference.

<font color=black>I think what he was getting at was that the modern filters were designed by the filter companies based on the specs that the vehicle and engine manufacturers are giving them, not that they were specifically designed for vehicle 'x'.

A common answer to this is a filtration test. Our oil company has performed this test for us in the past to aid in diagnoseing engine failures. An oil with suspended solids of different sizes is pumped independently through many different filters. The oil, and the filtration material can then be tested to see what micron size particles are passing or being retained. There are other aspects to the test as well.. moisture retention, and backpressure, and flow rate, and failure characteristics.

Personally, I like oem filters in some of my equipmentlike.. my tractor specifically...personal choice, but I would guess, that if the filter meets or exceeds manafacturer
specs.. it should be ok. Now all we need are the manufacturer specs for the yanmar filter, as designed in the 70's and 80's, and see if these current cross-overs meet those specs./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Soundguy and Inspector,

I agree with both of you,

I was asking a question as much as I was making a statement. Good point, I don't know which filter is better, the OTHER filters or the Yanmar filters, and that would interesting to know the standard and see what internals showed. What I find interesting now is that when you go into stores to buy a filter, there are many different configurations of the same brand claiming all kinds of fancy internals to filter the oil better and the pricing seems to go up with more claims. This could be a good thing, maybe technology is making a better filter. I would say that if a filter is made to filter oil in a diesel engine then it should not be a problem for the Yanmar. How many imports have you seen come over with their original oil filter on them (and I mean the one that came on the tractor new some 500 to 1000+ hours ago). Would one be less worried about a tractor that had a new Fram filter every fifty hours or a new Yanmar filter every 1000+ hours? As a poll here, anyone hear of anybody having a specific problem associated with using Other than Yanmar filters on their machine? That would be very iteresting to know and would be some guage as to what problems this practice could cause.

Soundguy,
Thats exactly what I was getting at. I'm not aware of any manufacturer that has produced a filter that meets Yanmar specs for a grey tractor. They may have some listed for the US versions, but they were designed for them to specs. There are specs for the element surface area, the burst pressure, by-pass valve and anti-drain back valve. So if I look at a filter in my local Pep Boys made by Fram or Wix, who knows how it compares to the original? I wouldn't know by looking at them. I would tend to trust an original part myself.

One thing to keep in mind when matching up filter threads and gasket sizes is filter capacity. For instance, ther is a car quest number that will cross to a napa number, for my yanmar 1700. The cq filter is smaller than the nappa filter. If it is smaller, there is most likely less filtration surface.
If I were using a non-oem filter, I might try to find one with the most filtration surface, which is generally equated to filter size*. ( * The way the filtration filter is folded ( or not folded) is directly proportional to the surface area of the filtration surface. With that in mind, a slightly smaller filter could contain more sqin of filter surface than a larger, flat wrapped filter. )

If we can get ahold of the original yanmar specs for their oil filters, I bet you we could dig up a tech supt. response from one of the big filter companies. Submit it as a question, does you filter 'x ' meet the following specs 'y', if not, do you carry one in similar dimensions that does?

We might be pleasently surprised. Hard part will be getting the yanmar specs...

I remember the first time I went hunting a filter for a 1500 I went to a local chain auto parts store called Carport. I had my old filter in a zip lock bag and told them it was off of a tractor. The guy behind the tractor opened up his book and said, "What kind?" "Don't bother, you aren't going to have this brand in there" I told him, but sure enough he had Yanmars in the book. For the smaller Yanmars it showed a Purolator L14459.

Well then once again, I stand corrected. They do list the greys by some manufacturers. Guess I just need to shut up......./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
