On my DK for the motor I cut a thin piece of cardboard and make a trough that I slip under the oil filter and angle down and towards the rear of the front axle.

Works well, couple drips is about it.

That's a great idea. I had stuffed a rag in the space below the filter in the hopes
of catching most of any spilled oil, but there was too much oil. Still made a mess.
Next time, I'll certainly try the piece of cardboard. Thanks for the suggestion!!

You can also form a directional funnel or chute out of aluminum foil or bend a thin throw-away aluminum pie plate into a conforming shape to direct the old oil.

And that gives you a reason to finish off all the pie!:D:licking:

That spilled oil on the frame may prevent rust a while longer. I know how frustrating it is and so does my wife when she washes my coveralls. I always put a big piece of cardboard on the floor to help catch drips while I am changing filters. Still beats paying someone to do it!!!!!!!!!!.

Not sure if they make anything aftermarket that can be installed, but on some things I have changed filters on, they have a nice little formed piece (kinda looks like a mini shovel head), that directs the oil away from the engine and into the drain pan.

But I am with you. Not so much because of the mess. I can clean that up and deal with it. I dislike oil filters mounted in any position other than vertical, because I cannot fill it with oil prior to starting the engine after the change. They say 90% of the wear on an engine is at startup. Well, what about startup and a few seconds after with NO OIL PRESSURE while you wait on the filter to fill:confused2:

My 2001 saturn, 2008 nissan sentra, kubota, ford 5500 TLB, ZTR with kohler, kawasaki prairie ATV, They ALL have Sideways filters.

Only my 2005 dodge cummins is vertical. But I hate doing that one too cause it isnt on the bottom side of the engine, it is clear up by the manifold but only accessible from the bottom. So lying on my back, its a full arms reach to get it. no way to get out from under it. So you get a nice run of oil down the arm and all the way to the armpit if wearing short sleeves :mur:

For something done as frequently as an oil change, They definatally dont appear to give much thought to the placement of the filter.

Good things can get messy like having sex I guess.

That interface is an oil cooler as you can see the coolant lines hooked to it. I had a guy tow a Jeep 4.0 in once after trying to get the oil filter off he poked holes through the filter with a large screwdriver then ripped the oil sending unit off the filter housing. He came in the shop just covered in oil. I laughed as he was trying to save a few bucks unfortunately not the case after he paid my bill to fix er up. Still have him for a customer, he's a surgeon only we change his earl nowadays so he keeps clean :umbrella-guy:

Bet that new snowblower worked well for you last week.

Regards, Fred

Thanks for link, Buckgnarly.

I remember the old Onan P218 engine had a built-in filter drain pan sticking out under the filter. But of course, that costs money so nobody puts those on stock anymore. As for filters sticking out sideways from engines, all the smaller engines are like that because that is the cheapest way to make the oil filter connection. On higher value (read: larger) engines, they spend the extra $10 to plumb 'em vertically downward for convenient maintenance.

Good rant, though! :hissyfit:
