Oil & Fuel Oil filter change required?

My BX2350 is approaching 100 hours. Had full 50 hour service including oil & filter change. Manual says at 100 hours, just change oil, not filter. My old man always drilled into my head that changing oil without changing the filter was a waste of time. Is there any good reason to NOT change the filter?

Your dad was a smart man, the way I see it "why change to a new filter when the oil is not as new"? It's cheap insurance for your expensive equiptment. I would not do one without the other. Protect your investment.

Yes. If you didn't have one,couldn't get one and they quit making them.

I personally would never change the oil without changing the filter. The purpose of an oil filter is just that: to collect & trap any contaminates that are in the oil. IMO you're just adding fresh oil and then immediately adding those contaminates back in when you don't change the filter. I'm sure there are more experienced people here who will give you their opinion but if I would not do it with my car I wouldn't think it 's good for a diesel tractor.

How about a contrary opinion. If the contaminates are large enough for the filter to catch them they are not going to get back into the oil stream with the new oil. You are not backflushing. Generally filtration improves to a point as the filter loads.

This is not to say that I don't usually change the filter when I change the oil. It is simply easier to keep track of what you have done without a lot of paperwork.

My opinion; replace oil and filter every time, my filter cost $7.89 well worth the expense. Makes for a $20-$25 oil change.

It should be a federal law that you can't buy oil without also buying a filter!

The BX manuals are kind of strange. If you look at the scheduled maintenance for every 50 hours, I think you will find that the filter is required too. They only list those things that are specific to the 100, 200, etc. maintenance points in that section. It confused me on my BX22 also until I looked a little deeper....

The manual says the same for my tractor. Ditto for my JD. I have no idea why anyone would go to the time and trouble to just change out the oil since the filter is cheap and easy to replace...
