Oil Filter Frustration

   / Oil Filter Frustration #21
I've bought the end cap type filter manglers, the Craftsman strap wrenches, all-in-one filter removers, the metal type filter removals and a couple of other things long since forgotten. Once I bought the Oil filter pliers, I won't go back to anything else. I use it on the Honda, the Silverado, and the little NH. (Haven't changed the oil in the Trailblazer so I don't know if I can on it or not yet). I've not had any problems with the pliers damaging anything - maybe a little dent on the fitler, but I don't care as it is coming off anyway.:D Incidentally, I bought the oil filter pliers when I did the oil change on my NH at about 160 hours and I couldn't get the filter off - I did the 50 hour change myself. I'm at almost 600 hours now.

Good morning. :) Good night, THE END! :)

Oh no! You don't get off that easy.;) You have to tell us how hard it is to get off the NEXT time you change oil. That's the true test.:D

I suspect PineRidge may be right that the delership didn't bother to oil the gasket. Or perhaps, someone has complained about a leaking filter and the tech at the dealership is going to make darn sure he doesn't get "pinged on" again for a leaking filter.:p

I think they put these filters on and tighten them down without smearing a bit of oil on the rubber filter gasket, hence the problem when it's time to take them off.

I've done it to myself before: Here is how you never get the filter off and end up breaking tools. I had the exact same tools less the craftsman strap and broke both of them. When I put that filter on, I lubed it and tightened it up with one of the wrenches. Next year time for an oil change and I couldn't get it off! Now here is something I go by and I never had trouble to get the filters of anymore: When you put that oilfilter on make sure it is hand tight. Trun that filter by hand as tight as you get it, but dont use that oilfilter wrench. Sine then I don't have trouble getting these darrn oil filters off!

Next time I'm around them I'll probably pick a pair up and add to the collection. From the two recommendations I've had on here sounds like they're the ticket. By golly after I hand tighten a filter I usually give like a 1/16 of a turn with the wrench for good measure but, last night she of course got the fresh oil on the gasket and hand tightened only. So how have you been Jim S?

Jim,
Is this going to be one of those threads where I'm called out and asked how my oil filters doing every week? LOL :) I'll post the results the next time. Then the thread can finally die.

That is probably true about not oiling the gasket. I was surprised the gasket didn't stick to the mounting area once I took it off. It stayed on the filter though. I need to go out and start it up this morning. Once I replaced the filter and added some oil I decided to just call it a night and start it up in the morning. It was just to peaceful and quiet at 1:00 AM to wake everyone in the holler up. :) Later

Thank all for the moral support and putting up with my posts. :) Have a good'n' today and stay cool.

So how have you been Jim S?

I've been doing pretty well. Thought this was to be more relaxing summer since the garage was "done." Hasn't turned out that way. We have had several minor - medium projects going on that have kt us busy. Invisible fence for the dogs, redoing the driveway, a fence around the wife's flower garden, and we had our ditch cleaned out so I've had a bunch of sandly/gravely/clay to distribute throught the yard. At least these have all resulted in seat time - thus the need for the canopy. My head felt like it was getting sun burned and I was wearing a hat and I have hair. I got to mow with it the first time Saturday, sure seems like it is going to keep my nose from getting sunburned more too.:D

How are you holding up with the gas prices and the commute? It is really taking a toll on our finances, I have had the Honda in the shop a few times here lately, and it has really been bad having to drive the Silverado or the Trailblazer to work. Like them, but don't like the MPGs. Last week I put $50 in the Silverado on Sunday (just because it was empty), $46 in the Honda on Tuesday (it then went to the shop), $50 in the Trailblazer on Thursday, and then $14 in the Honda on Friday (I heard a caller on the radio saying gas was $3.29 in Westerville and I saw gas for $2.81 and thought I better fill-up while it was cheap:eek: ).

Glad you got it off! I once had a Chevy 350 oil filter that would not come loose. I finally ended up driving a drift pin thru it & twisting it off. What a major pain w/all that oil dripping everywhere as I hammered the pin thru the can several times. I now always lube the gasket w/new oil & only put it on hand tight. Never had a problem since.

Well, I drive the ole 97 escort to work. Which is still expensive anymore. It was down last week until I fixed the problem over the weekend replacing passenger side tie rod end, ball joint, and drive axle. I had the other drive axle order from Auto Zone but, after replacing the main problem I said heck with the other side it was fine anyway. I just figured I replace both sides while I was at it. As long as I can help it I'm not replacing the drive axles anymore. That was a pain.

Didn't drive the diesel to work but, drove the F-150 a couple times last week. Both trucks eat a hole in the pocket pretty quick. Really no since for the diesel prices to be what they are. More of a balancing scheme I think. Anyhow wife's good daughter is good, and I'm just trying to get myself settled in at the new place. A lot of grass seed to sow this fall. Back field I'm going to plant in Oats and Chicory. I've been trying to give my tractor a little TLC the last couple days. Got the lubrication and fluid checks done. Would like to change the radiator fluid this weekend and clean my fuel filter bowl out. After that I'll be ready to work her to 300 hours. Hurray!! We've been moved in, if that's what you want to call it, for a little over a month. Still have stuff in boxes that I have no idea where I really want to put it. Takes time I guess. Seat time is going to pick up now. I don't have to load the tractor up every time I need to use it. That is really nice. Good to hear from Jim. I think I'm back for awhile on here now that things are settling down some.

Thanks. Me too. When you only have a short amount of time to do something that you plan to get done and like in my case I was expecting to get it changed in 30 minutes before heading off to work that day. Then you run into the stuck oil filter and you think "maaaan I don't have time for this!!!". I'm learning though.... to just make of it what it is. No since to be in a rush. It just breads anger and frustration something we all deal with from time to time I guess. Then we take it out on others but, don't intentionally mean too.

Oil it..... shoot.... I might start putting some Anti-Seize on the gasket. lol :) Thanks for replying.

Hey all, I know the manual say 6.3 qts. is the capacity including filter for TC40/45, but what do you all put in based on the size of filters they now use or was that before my model when they changed the filter size? Would only 6 qts. be sufficient? I notice I was a touch above full today after adding approx. 6.3 last night. Yes I've ran the tractor. I thought about draining it a touch, but probably will not.

I don't think the "perfect" oil filter wrench has been invented. They all work ok on some and not worth much on others. Usually an oil filter that is stuck is installed with a dry gasket and torqued too tight.
