Oil Filter number for Kohler 23hp Command?

( I've heard several people tell me that it is not a good idea to put automotive filters on any small engine since supposedly the are very different inside even if externally they look the same. Is that the consensus here as well? )

I've been doing it for the last 30 years with no problem. I'm using the same automotive oil (Qualer State or Havoline) that I use in my car so why not filter it with the same filter?
My 1450 Kohler ran 1100 hours and was still running good and not burning oil. I have 107 hours on my 2004 3235 with Kohler Command 25.

Going againist the grain here, I run only OEM filters on all of my vehicles and Cub Cadets. GM cars/trucks use GM filters, CCC tractors use CCC filters, Kohlers engines use Kohler filters, ect.

By using Brand X you might save a $1, but if its under warranty the claim may be denied. Why even risk it???

Going againist the grain here, I run only OEM filters on all of my vehicles and Cub Cadets. GM cars/trucks use GM filters, CCC tractors use CCC filters, Kohlers engines use Kohler filters, ect.

Last poster has a point why risk it.... but it is a misnomer that there is anything special about the filters fitted to small air cooled engines as against car filters. The main difference is car filters are bigger - so take longer to clog up which is good and they hold more oil which is good. I've got a lot of boxes of new but old stock filters that i fit on my machines because they are free to me. You need the right thread, you need the right seal diameter, you need something that will fit in the space, if the filter does not hang downwards you need one with the anti drain flaps (visible through the outer ring of holes). If you are not going to change the filter regularly or you have a dirty worn engine you need to consider the blow off pressure of the bypass relief valve if fitted to the filter but if you change it regularly this need not be a concern. I've got three air cooled engines that have clocked up 6 thousand hours between them on this basis. As previuos poster said, the oils the same, they run about the same pressure (my briggs vanguard L head runs 30 psi hot) why should the filter be different? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Of course you realize that GM or Ford or Chrysler don't really make filters so you may be using the same filter as the cheaper one. Years ago I used to use AC/Delco filters on my GM cars but now I use mostly Fram since that seems to be the predominant filter found at Walmarts, K-Mart etc. Oddly enough the few times I've had my oil changed at local Cadillac dealers, they used Penzoil filters and oil. and not AC

Of course you realize that GM or Ford or Chrysler don't really make filters so you may be using the same filter as the cheaper one. Ford even uses different manufacturers filters in production than they sell as replacement parts.

The warranty worries are unfounded. They can't void your warranty for using replacement parts that are not OEM unless they can prove that part is the reason for the failure. That keeps the OEM's from doing things like voiding your entire car warranty because you put a GE replacement bulb in a taillamp instead of buying a "Motorcraft" bulb at a Ford dealer.

The other thing mentioned was cost. In my case I wasn't trying to save money. I was looking for a better quality replacement filter than the Champion Labs manufacturered OEM Kohler filter...
