Oil & Fuel Oil filters

I posted a question about my LS 4540 tractor and where to get oil filters etc. about ten days ago and got one response. Disappointing at best. I still have some questions. Upon looking up a suggested filter crossreference web site and coming up with an oil filter that should have worked on my tractor I had three different brands of filter sent to my auto shop on Sat. morning and not one would fit. The threaded stub sticking out of the side of the engine block is too short to reach any of the threads in any of the filters. The only filter that will thread on is the one from Montana and the dealer sells that filter which seems of no special quality for 17.99 when the crossreferenced filter in a Wix product costs me 3.50. What a rip off.

This leads me back to my first and still unanswered question. Is my LS4540 tractor the same as the 4540 tractors already talked about on this web site. If it is the same has anyone experienced this problem and what did you do about it?

After spending a frustrating weekend servicing my tractor I now have another question. What type of fluid is supposed to go in the rear brake drum portion of the rear axle. The manual in not clear and the dealer recommended multi-purpose hydralic fluid even though the fluid that came out of the drum area was very heavy gear oil.

Hope to hear something on these things soon. Special thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

i'm suffering similar filter problemswith my 3040....thought i had it figured out with the website cross reference...turns out nobody stocks the one I need for hydraulics.......got it straightened out last week.

I am also curious about the gear oil in the rear axle outer housings....It seemed like sae 80 gear oil to me. The manual refers to this but also indicates trans/hyd (TDH?)oil is acceptable for the whole rear axle / trans /hydraulics..

for my application (3040) I needed a Luber Finer LFH8207

I was also able to get numbers for AC Delco and WIX...but could not track down the filters. If I still have the numbers writte down, I'll post them tomorrow

I have used Donaldson p550162 and Napa 1334 oil filters on my 4540. They both fit fine.

I cannot confirm the compatabilty...but here are the numbers I was given for hydraulic filters for a 3040

filter diameter =4.282"
gasket diameter = 3.967 od, 3.587 id
threads = 40x2mm (roughly 1 1/2" dia)

WIX - 51715
AC Delco - PF1621
GM - 89034949
Luber Finer - LFH8207

I found Ken on an old thread here and found him very helpful this week as I was putting together my order. In his original thread, he wrote ... My company ...
