oil flow question on gm 5.3

If I remember right that spec used to 1 qt in 500 miles or maybe 1k but either way its bogus and is a cya for GM. .

I agree.. it's a complete bogus CYA answer to some bad designe flaw they put into production..

In fact imo whats an engine to GM when it would go a long ways tword building a life long return customer?! .

And that's why there are 3 fords parked in my driveway along with that 1 gm vehicle.

This thread is interesting in that my '05 5.3 w/62k has had a steady diet of 5w-30 Mobil 1 and it don't seem to use a drop between 3.5k filter changes. I'm sure it uses some but you can't tell it by the dip stick. Your consumption is scarey to me. I could not live w/that.

I just changed oil & filter yesterday because it had been almost 2 years but only 7.8k miles. And the filter does let a lot run by, maybe 1/4 qt. when changed. I seem to make a mess every time I do that.

Some of them dont burn oil, its not a Syn oil thing that keeps it from doing it. I think there is another guy in this thread that posted his dosent use oil as well. Its a GM thing it seems like, my saturn has used oil as long as i have been around it and my father in laws Yukon used it in the tbi 350 5.7l as long as he had it as well. That said i have a s15 jimmy with the 2.8l and cant tell that it ever used a drop the 10k miles or so i put on it?

Just for conversation since we are talking oil usage. But just last week a long time customer comes in and says he just changed oil in his 99 Honda Odyssey van and he drove it 500 miles one weekend moving a kid home from school and it used a qt of oil.

He said he doesn't have a leak and he had someone follow him and see if there was smoke in the exhaust (which there definitely is) but they couldn't see it.

After talking to him a few minutes I asked if he didn't by chance put synthetic in this time? Yep he sure did and his thinking was @ 160k a better oil would give him extra life.

I explained if he had always run it thats one thing but after this long it is not good on an engine with a lot of miles. They invariably either leak or use oil and most of the time in my experience anyway they do both. ymmv as always

I will post the results of his switch back to dino oil if I think about it when the time comes.
