Oil/grease conversion data

I came across this during my quest to figure out what NLGI #00 grease is (turns out is viscosity is the same as 85W gear oil - so that's what I dumped in).

What are you using it for, Jay? I'm guessing that grease would have different, application-specific, additives than gear oil...

Maybe, but who cares - lube is lube. I'm putting it in the "transmission" (and I use that term loosely) for my 80's vintage Snapper LT16 lawn tractor. The transmission is a simple differential and reduction gear w/ chain-drive. Truth be told, I could put anything in there and it would work just fine. Using something with the same viscosity as specified is a bonus.

I'm using the tractor specifically for running a snowblower attachment to clear a driveway - I figured the gear oil would be better in the cold than grease.

Good luck - your right about the lub qualities, but you will be lucky if that 85 wt oil stays in it. Snapper "00" grease is MUCH thicker than 85 wt oil.
I am not familiar with the Snapper model you have but the 85 wt oil will leak out of the Snapper models I have had experience with.
