Oil \"Idiot Light\" JD 755

Had a problem with the oil "idiot light" on my JD 755. The light started to "flicker" very dimly and varies in dimness as you rev through the RPMs. It does light up bright and fully illuminated when cranking and then starts to flicker when running. The flickering stops at high and low RPMs. I changed out the oil and put in a new sending unit. The light still "flickers" dimly. Could this just be a bad ground connection or could there be a serious problem with the oil pump? I have not put a gauge at the sender and measured the pressure yet but I think that I should.

Does anyone have a suggestion for troubleshooting or an idea of what the oil pressure should be when I do measure it?

It sounds like an intermittment connection. The best way is your own suggestion, get a real gage where the sending unit is and you will know for sure!

If the pressure is correct, the light should not be on at all when it is running. So I would tend to think it might be a bad sensor. But I would check the pressure with a guage to make sure.

Screw a manual gauge inthere before you crank it again. many times thouse idiot senders are only sensing minimum pressures.. I.e. cut out at 6 psi. If the dash lamp glows bright sounds liek the power circuit is good. You can pull the wire and test by grounding it to the block.. lamp should light up.. etc. If you have change dthe sender and it still does this.. I'd sweat a bit and spend the 9$ on a mechanical gauge, and hope to see it pressure up when i cranked it over..

What I did was get a "T" fitting and put it on where the sending unit screws into the block. I attached the the sending unit to one side and ran tubing to a guage (mounted below the dash) from the other. Now I can always read the actual pressure and have the warning light to attract my attention if something goes wrong. Like, for instance, when a branch grabbed the tube to the gauge and it started spewing oil everywhere.
