Hi guys, another newbie here. I recently purchased my first tractor, a YM2000. I have reservations over where it was refurbished, due to some quality of the rebuild and paint. However my question is regarding normal oil leakage for these tractors. I have put about 15hrs on it since I brought it home and have noticed seepage from the headgasket area between the cylinders, and possibly crankcase pressure causing more oil to seep from the oil dipstick area of the block. Also, I have some leakage from the PTO shaft area as well. I have a warranty on it but would like some opinions on what is normal before I take it in. I realize older diesels are typically "dirty", so most of this may not be an issue, I have not had to add fluid yet. I'm very happy with the tractor overall, would just like to know if you guys have seen issues from these areas and if I'm over reacting. Thanks for the help.

I think oil leaking from the head gasket is not a normal thing, unless the headgasket is old, which it might be.
seepage is normal (at least from my experience.). The seepage should not manifest to active drips. When that happens, something more serious is taking place and action should take plce.....

How about making sure the head bolts are torqued to 90lbs. That might cure the seepage.

First, welcome to TBN. How does your warranty read? I mean is it so many hours or months? I am very curious as to how they presented the tractor...as in new belts, hoses, seals etc. Does it cover mechanical, electrical and hydraulics?
After 15 hours of fairly heavy duty (brush hogging, loader work or box blading) even new seals will weep...as in wipe it away with a rag.
And as bruce1966 suggested, re-torque the head...and while your in there check and adjust valves. That may tell you the kind of attention to detail they used in the reconditioning process.

Thats what I was afraid of. The head seepage doesnt appear to be too severe, it just leaves oil traces down the block,I would hope the torque is correct. the dipstick seems to be contributing more of an oil leak. Thanks for the input guys, I'll see what the dealer says, I'm going to let him handle any repair durring the warranty period.

The warranty is for 6months, he told me the tractor was refurbished in the U.S.,basicly repairing anything that needed attention. He would handle any trouble I had with it. I have worked it prety good.

If your dipstick screws into the block, it could be missing an o-ring. Absence of an o-ring will let it leak. I would urge you to contact the seller and give him the chance to help you. I didn't see any mention that you had done that, so if not, make that your first contact. The seller cannot know you are having a problem with the machine if you don't tell him. Despite the negative info about certain sources, that is not market-wide. Even a repaint does not mean a VN recon, as some dealers do repaint.....we are doing some painting on older units that are badly faded. Regardless of the original source of the tractor, give the seller a chance. If he is sincere about his warranty, he will either effect repairs, or explain to you why something is not a problem.

To answer your original question, "0" oil leakage is normal on a Yanmar. It's just a matter of whether it's bad enough to need repairs or not. My YM2000B, 600 hours, appears to be all original, and has no oil leaks.
LMTC, Thanks for the input. I do plan on contacting him, he seems to be a stand up guy, that will do what he says. I havent mentioned this to him yet because I wanted to see if I was overreacting. You know how an early Harley will always leak no matter what you do, but a new one doesnt. I feel a little more confident that it does have a problem, so I will see what he can do. Thanks again guys for all the quick responces and good info.
Just an update for you guys, I spoke to the dealer today and he told me as long as it wasnt hurting the tractor and I didnt mind keeping an eye on it, he would address all of my concerns when I bring it in for service after I have added 40-50 hrs on it. I think thats fair enough, he's noted the issues and I have time to notice anything else that may pop up. Thanks for the help.
