I am getting ready to do my 50 hour service and was wondering, just where is the transmission oil strainer? The manual says to clean it but doesnt tell where it is, just shows the two bolts underneath to drain the fluid.

I may be wrong but I don't believe you have to worry about checking that. The 50 hr. service is mainly just changing the engine oil and oil filter.

I am not sure on your 5500, but my 6520 has the transmission and hydraulic reservoir combined. So I have a transmission & hydraulic suction strainer. It is located under the tractor, on the left side just forward of the draw bar mount. It is a pain to get to, as I have the BH subframe under there also. It is on the list of things to check and clean in my 50 hour inspection in the Ops manual. It has four bolts and is about 3.5-4 inch square plate.gtater said:

Welcome. As you have the 5500 you probably don't even have a trans oil strainer...that you can get to anyway....as the hyd res and the trans are separate. Your hyd oil filter (suction side is just forward of your foot on the right side and below...Your trans takes 80W-90 gear oil and is drained from the bottom of the diff. (I changed mine at about 200 hours, as I had accummulated some condensation in there). Your hyd oil res only holds about 4 ish gallons (if they haven't changed it in the last few years). You check your hyd oil at the plug just behind and to the right side of the operators seat. The trans dipstick is just about the PTO shield. Good luck! BobG in VA

Sorry you were not pleased with my response Larry. I actually think in the manual it is refering to the older 00 Series tractors, I believe in the new 00 Series they no longer have the trans oil strainer.

Funny, Red River, but my manual (4500, 5500, 6000, and 6500) with my just a year old says clean the strainer at 50 hours and during every tranny oil change AND says replace the power steering filter element -- the later coming as something of a surprise to my dealer. There's no reason to expect you, or any dealer to have the service schedules memorized, after all that's why we are given manuals. But it still would be nice to get a solid confirmation that "newer 00 series" (whatever that means -- a serial number cutoff would be really handy) don't have a tranny oil strainer that needs to be cleaned.
