The varible speed transmissions used on the larger tractors,100 HP and above, are not hydrostats, they are a varible speed, not the same principle. The early IH's were hydro's, but not these new ones. The HP requirements increase, and the reliablility goes down as the HP goes up, that why powershift transmissions were used and hydros were abanded. Not efective power transfer on large drawbar loads
Hydrostats, in farming operations, have found there best place is harvesting operations, SP combines, SP hay windrowers, nut harvesting equip, and so on.

Even for cutting fields there would be a time savings with HST. I could cut faster on the straightaways than I can take the corners, so with a gear, unless I want to be shifting all the time, I have to take the lower speed. And I can't use the foot throttle at all in that situation since I want to stay at 540rpm.

Chuck,
I was waiting to see if someone else would say something. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif From looking at the line drawing of a CVT, they have very little if anything in common with the compacts hydros. The CVT horsepower loss is virtually nil also. I think that I might like a CVT. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I might like it also. A few years ago I heard they were trying something like CVT in automobiles. This CVT is getting very interesting to watch. First Fengt, then Deere, now it looks like AGCO is going to have it in AGCO tractors, Cat Challanger Tractors, and Valtra.

I have driven a couple Deere CVTs and they are nice. Good control over speed but it kind of drives like a gear when it is not. What I mean is you still have the reverser lever, a clutch pedal, and turning brakes.

Hi,

The Fendt Vario CVT debuted in Germany in 1996. There are Fendts over in Germany with over 14,000 hours on them, and still going strong> I love the Idea of CVT and no power loss, pluss still being able to drive it like a gear tractor> The new Fendt Vario 930 puts out 310HP..................the first ever fixed frame tractor to reach that HP mark, and the most powerful one in the world>. The MF 7400 Dyna VT has been out in Europe for over a year now and it will make its debut here shortly!!

See you

Will

I've got IVT, infinitely variable transmission, on my 8320 and it is not a hydro.

I have eHydro and it is great for bush hoggong. You set the cruise AND LoadMatch and it regulates the tranny by wire to the load changes with differant grass/brush thickness. It works so smoothly you forget its doing anything, but leave loadmatch turned off and the engine can get bogged down in a hurry...

CBDoc,
I've been toying with the idea of buying a new 6420 with the IVT. Any thoughts or comments on this model?

I was a little concerned with the IVT since it hasn't been on the market long.
Do you like it?
Wouldn't do without it?
Or would the PQ+ have been just as good?

The IVT is nice but depending on what you are doing I think the PQ would be just as good. I pulled the planter, ripper, and field cultivator pretty hard and have about 350 hours on the tractor now and have not had any problems with it.
