My father has an L4200 which he tried to use to run a 7' bush hog. I think the hp was enough, but the 3pt was too light, and he bent the lower lift arms trying to lift and move the hog.

Dazed, I've planted 3+ acres of lawn plus many patch jobs using a tiller. The trick is to have it level to begin with. A Harley rake needs loose soil and the gauge wheels then do the final leveling. With a tiller alone I fertilize and lime first then till. This leaves the soil very fluffy. I apply seed by hand or with a drop seeder then I roll it with a 4 ft water filled roller behind a lawn tractor with turf tires. This nicely presses the seed into the "fluff" and erases footprint and tire marks. I don't use any straw since the seed is kind of pressed into the top layer of soil. Then it's water water water gently. Now is the best time to plant grass; the weeds don't come and a good stand is raring to go in the spring and beats the weeds.

RCH: What's a 'Harley rake'? Got a pic? I have exactly the same situation ahead of me, 3.5 acres of what was corn 5 years ago, then hay until last year, now grass/weeds. Too rough to mow easily, I was planning on tilling little pieces at a time with my 48" First Choice tiller behind BX2200, then seeding and rolling, didn't think about raking after tilling, do I need to?

I remember an old wise tail about planting grass only in months that have an 'r'. I'm getting ready to put my front lawn in next month. Might need less watering also.
