Tiller Old 2000 rpm tiller

Just wondering My father in law has a MF tiller off a 1655 48" wide but the rpm speed is 2000.
I'm buying a JD2210 and the rear speed is 540 is there anything on the market to chg speeds to make this work

The grey market tractors (manufactured for use in Japan) have gearboxes for the PTO, and so can turn a tiller at 2000 rpm. I haven't heard of any way to make a JD turn the PTO that fast. I've used my Yanmar tractor and tiller at 540, 1100, and 2000 rpm with little difference in performance. I make the first pass at low rpm, and then the final pass at higher rpm. It works just as well to make three passes at 540 rpm, though.

Are you sure the MF calls for 2000 PTO rpm and not engine rpm?

I asked MF just last week and they said the pto speed was 2000
also 5 yrs ago when I bought my old 425 the JD dealer said it was 2000
I was wondering what would it do to the tiller to connect it to the JD that only has a 540

yeah that tiller is designed for a garden tractor, cat. 0 probably....you also should check to see if the shaft size is the same as the JD....anyhow I think it will spin to slowly to work well, it is almost 1/4 the speed it is designed to spin....

Some gray market tractors could run it!! I think an adapter could be engineered but prob cost too much...... It won't spin fast enough.. If you have a front pto u could maybe run it forward but ud have to reverse the inner gears and make a front 3 pt hitch....Again cost too much....

if it wont work at a lower rpm Id take it to an old timers machine shop/welding shop. Im not an old timer but I was trained by them lol. A few high rpm tillers got here and a friend and I took som old 3 speed transmission and turned them around backwards locked into low gear. A transfer case will work as well. and they are short to. you just mount the transmission or transfer case to the tillers frame and make and input adapter shaft for your ptoshaft. I did 5 one with a transmission and 1 with a jckshaft and chain drive. and the other 3 used various transfer cases.

I had a Snapper 1855 with a 48" tiller, which was probably the same as the one you have. I sold the Snapper and bought a front mount tractor, primarily to get a better snow blower and a cab. A couple of years ago I decided I wanted a tiller for the front mount so bought a used 3ph tiller and converted it. One of the problems I had to overcome was the opposite to yours, i.e. pto output at 1100 rpm and machine geared for 540 rpm. It turned out I also needed to reverse the rotation direction. I bought a 2:1 gear reducer which also reversed direction so I solved both issues at the same time. Check the rotation required for the tiller - if it needs to be reversed you may have a similar situation to what I had. The attached photo shows the gear reduction case - the pto shaft is the lower one that comes from the right, the output shaft to the tiller is the upper one that exits to the left coupled to the gear box on the tiller. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
