The gearbox on a 20 year old Bush Hog is leaking, can I fill with grease, what type should I use and should I drain old oil out first?
Thanks in advance

You don't need to drain whatever oil is left in the gearbox, just pump a bunch of grease in it and check it yearly when you do your Spring maintenance on the slip clutch, PTO shaft , etc, it will be good for the life of the gearbox.

This is from Tractor Supply and works well. I don't think the regular grease you use in a greasegun works because it gets pushed away from the gears and hardens, leaving the gears with no lube.

I have an old rotary cutter that I have been using grease in the gear box for MANY years, and it gets used hard.

I just buy cheeep tubes of grease and put it in a half tube at a time, it works perfectly.

I use 00 picker grease. It is not pourable but I remove the fill plugs and pump it in with a grease gun. It becomes thin enough with a little heat to fill all the nooks and cranny’s but thick enough not to run right back out of a bad seal.

I read on here several months ago a solution and it Worked for me: replace gear box oil with John Deere Corn Head Grease [Amazon -2 pack] I have a Hardee Williams 6' that would go through 90w. Drained it as best I and put in 2 tubes
which is still there, cut grass all summer ...I just bought two more tubes - just incase, I can see no loss since put it in

Put a quart of Lucas oil additive, it’s thick like the old STP and will slow or stop the leaking rig to get by.

I put corn head grease in my old Rebel Bush hog and it’s not leaked since

Will second the Super S 00. I've used it for years with a bad bottom seal with no issues. The bottle works well to just squeeze into the vent hole.

This works well. Drain and fill
Lucas Hub Oil.
