I have this old horse drawn grader and it looks like a good copy to make up a hydraulic one. What do you think?

Do some searching and you should find new " tractor pull graders " that could also be used as a model. The harows look good. A new set like that cost about $600 can.

I've heard guys say that the rear ends of these were light (especially if you remove the human ballast!) and tended to walk when the blade is angled.

It can be modified to weight it down........

I used to have one (bigger wheels and 2 big 'wheel's on it to raise and lower the blade). Always thought I should remove the front wheels (it was horse drawn once too) and fix the front to the tractor drawbar. Never did, but it can do a good job of levelling. The comment it is light in the shorts is right on, and adding a person wouldn't change that enough. If the wheels can take it, add 500 - 1000 pounds along with your hyd. rams for tilt at least, angle if it works out, and then rely on the drawbar being a 3pt drawbar to control depth of cut.

My wife still remembers when I would drive and try to give her instructions on the big wheels, or she would drive and I would try to give her instructions where to drive. Neither worked at all! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif That was probably the biggest reason to sell it. Now, with the hyd. possibilities, wish I had it back (at least I did before laying down asphalt on the drive two months ago /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

I still have the front wheels and seat(which is on my potato planter). this old thing used a ring like on newer graders but I think I will build one with a longer wheelbase because i don't want to butcher this one. There are good ideas on this thing that I will copy and put on the one I build.

If you could find an old worn out motor grader you might be able to get some good blade control parts.

My neibors up back raise belgins, (draft horses) and they cut in their drive using a 4 horse team with this grader which looks similar to you'res with plow shares arttached and it cuts raises the dirt up onto its self for more weight to cut with and the dirt is moved to the side. they cut 6" at a time about 8' wide! it was slick as snot if not a bit slow. left the dirt on a long pile at the edge which was then loaded up and removed. had/has all kinds of mechanical moving parts though and looks very complicated to copy. not even sure if they still have it. it was setting back on the property line when I bought my place but only got to see it setting covered in snow, not working, he told me all about it durring our first good conversation. really nice guy he brushed hogged my upper plot 3 or 4 times already for me free of charge. that plot is more or less thier side lawn though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif their drive is just a bit above 1/2 mile long! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

anyhow the amish are using tools which look just like that around here. got to admire their work ethic when you see them plowing 5~10 acres with 2~4 horse teams and 1~2 bottom x 12" plows!!! though some of them have those new fangled fancy plows which you get to set & ride on while the horses do all the work! lol

Mark The old grader you are refering to sounds like an old elevating grader. it was used to load bottom dump wagons and build terraces and berms.
