I bought an old model M John Deere this weekend. The man that I bought it from said that it is a 1953 model. But upon some research I found out that they only built the M from 1947-1952. Is there somewhere to find out what year it actually is by the serial #? Any suggestions would be helpful.

It sounds great. it was totally rebuilt about 14 years ago and had been sitting in a garage ever since. I had to put a new battery in it, clean the old gas out and file the points. Every thing works great. I think I did ok for $3k. What do you think? Thanks for the info on the ser# breaks.

kujaneckinga,

I'm not an expert on collectable tractors but I would guess you certainly did not get burnt on this one. From the picture it looks great and if it runs good I would say you have a fine old John Deere there. They have a five day event called The Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant Iowa every Labor Day weekend. It's a great place for antique tractor nuts. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif If you would like information just do a search on Old Threshers. I don't know where you live but I know people show up there from everywhere. It's one of the largest antique tractor events in the country. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from your new investment! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Do you have the serial number handy?..if not check plate on instrument panel under ignition swtich lever..JD use to put the ID tag there.

Craig gave a good listing of M's years, also JD offer MT from 1949 to 1952.

Tractortips.com might be able to help w/some specs.

Indeed she a beauty. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

If you want to delve deeper into the tractor you have, you can contact (even join now) the Club of two-cylinder owners.

http://www.two-cylinder.com/

There you will be able to find out where the two-cylinder shows are, and where the local Clubs are located.

Thanks, I think the wife and I will have alot of fun with it. I was suprized when she said go ahead and get it if you want it. I think she likes it better than me. I don't think I will make it out to the thashers thing. Its a long way from Georgia.
