Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes. Tom T Hall.

I'm real sorry to hear about your dog. We lost 2 cockers around Christmas of 1996 and it was really tough. I spent a lot of time on the internet reading "lost pet" forums and it made me feel better. A couple of months later we got another cocker and he rules the house now. Will be 5 in October. Dogs are truly a blessing, and although they don't live very long, people live longer because of their companionship.

I know it will be hard when I lose my dog. Father brought him home from work one day because it was just hanging around. That was eleven or twelve years ago. For an old dog he couldn't be more energetic. i don't understand why people say it is bad for dogs to eat table srcaps. my dog always has got them along with his dog food and he couldn't be healthier. He does have his helping of vegetables though. He loves it when we sheel peas or have corn cobs that aren't any good because he will eat anything that is left in the pods and on the corn. One year he even went along and took the carrots right out of the garden when he wanted a snack.

Rat, I'm sorry about your lose. Believe me, I understand. I still cry when I think about every dog I've had since I was a kid. The hardest thing when I went through my divorce was giving up my two dogs to my ex. I know she takes good care of them, but I really miss them. They are real home dogs, and would rather stay where they grew up, so I let my ex have them because I knew it would be less stressful to them. I have two dogs again, and they're my best friends. I think about them all day, and can't wait to see them after work. Like John said, people who never had dogs will never understand, but those of us who love dogs share a bound.
The only way to get over the pain is to get another dog. The new one doesn't replace the one you lost, but helps you get through the grief.
Hang in there!!

Rich

Hearing the words, "The best thing to do is let her down today", Broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes. My little akita had a cancerous tumor on her stomach which spread to her spinal column. She lost all feeling in her back legs and was not able to walk anymore. I had my akita sense she was 2 months old untill just yesterday when we had to let her down. She was 9 years old. I thought of her as my little sister. She was with me for more than half of my life. That is what really made it hard for me to say goodbye.

Tasha, I am 56 years old and I have had dogs ever since I was a baby and throughout my entire life. I have had to watch all of them go, in different ways, and I had to watch my children watching them go. It is very, very difficult, as everyone has said. The good news is that you will always have your memories of your akita. The further good news is that you can have many more wonderful relationships with other dogs throughout your life. It's worth it.

One of the many pleasures in owning/possessing/co-habitating/being owned by a dog (depending on viewpoint)

Tasha, its been awhile since I was forced to make that decision about my old dog Jenny, a golden retreiver. I can certainly feel for you and only hope that you gave her a great life that you can reflect back on with joy. It is a very difficult choice to be faced with, especially when you look at their innocent face that has always trusted you. Nothing we can so will ease the burden of your pain, but know that many of us have had to do the same and understand, Rat

I hear ya, Rat. At my house, our pets are the most important things in our lives (no children). They always come first. The last friend I lost was a Black Lab mix I had to put down a year and a half ago and I still can't look at her pictures. She was 14. We now have 3 dogs and 3 cats. A photo of two of them is attached. Who says cats and dogs don't get along?!
