Hi all. I was rummaging through some old photos that belong to a relative and came up with this oldie. It was likely taken in the 20's or 30's (I'm totally guessing here), and it was taken in the central-northern part of Nova Scotia. I am likely related to someone in the photo, but I don't know who. Any idea what the tractor is?

I'm no expert on Models A's, but that would be my first guess. I have a '28 doodle bug model A and it is similar, but I suspect the pic is an older version.

It is pulling a binder, my father has a couple of those, one of which I'd love to restore and use.

Those old grain binders are really neat.

Makes those tiny bundles. Easy for your little kids to handle, I suppose, so they can participate in the harvest.

The Farmall is also neat. I like those steel wheels.

Them were the days.

Do not fear; Egon has spent considerable time sitting on a tractor pulling a similar machine.:D :D :D

The binder had a carrier so it could accumulate about six sheaves before dumping. Kicking them on the ground one at a time makes for hard stooking!:D :D

Egon has memories of the horse drawn binder also.

Back when he was still in school, 5'th grade he recalls, there was an assignment that involved writing an essay on farm safety that was for a county wide competition. Egon missed the competition part as he was a classroom with three grades and one teacher and was probably napping or daydreaming as the assignment was verbally handed out.

Anyways, he did get the essay written. It was about a neighbour who had damaged himself when cleaning off the platform canvas of the binder and the horses bolted.

For his labours he did receive first prize in the county which also had $35.00 dollars along with it. A small fortune for a poor farm boy with worn out shoes and no socks.:D

Now it was not his writing prowess that caught the judges eye. The piece was written with the skill of a challenged fourth grader. It was the fact that it was an entry that did not exhibit the writing skills of an adult that was the deciding factor!:D :D :D

Not trying to take over the thread, just recalling memories of binders to go with that excellent picture.:D

It's OK, Egon, I somehow figured this would get you all inspired!

Then you will not mind if I mention that I do know how to install the platform and elevator canvas on a binder and could pull all the levers for proper adjustment. Riveting new blades on the sickle bar holds no magic either. Even the bundle or sheave size can be adjusted as well as the tightness of the knot. Heck, I could even repair the chain link drive chains. The twine used to come in six pack paper bags tied up with a piece of rope. The rope made good halter ropes.

Wrens used to love nesting in twine holder.:D :D :D

You are clearly much older than me! :) OK, I have another piece of old farm equipmenmt that was abandoned on my property before I bought it. It's been there so long the alders are growing up through it. I'll try to post that too and see if you can guess what it is! Coming soon - maybe after this weekend.

OK Egon (and others) - here's a few pics taken of an old piece of farm machinery that I found on a piece of property I bought a few years ago. I have absolutely no idea what it is. Alders and grass are growing up through it. There are wheels and gears and a big chain. I have some inclination to cut down the alders and haul it out and just park it in near my garage. Any clues what it might be????

Kinda hard to tell much from all the small puzzle pictures. It does have a bullwheel drive for something or other though.
