I picked up an old 2 bottom plow over the weekend cheap and has no cutters or tail wheel, will it still work? I have about 5-6 acres of over grown fields I want to turn over before disking.

Pictures of your plow would help.

Coulters (cutters) and a tail wheel are nice to have, not essential for 5-6 acres. Without coulters you will have to mow fields very short before plowing or vegetation will accumulate in the plow throat and stop you. Glycophosphate would be an alternative.

You can pull a 2-12" for sure (144 square inches of soil displacement), probably a 2/14" (196"); a 2-16" doubtful (256") if you have rocks in your soil. (This assumes plow wear parts are complete, sharp and not deformed.)

Make sure the plowshare is shiny and not rusty before you start, rust creates a lot of additional friction. I hope the land you want to plow is FLAT.

Adjusting a Moldboard Plow properly is an art.

So the coulters just cut the vegetation off the front of the Plow? the fields have been cut and I will make sure to cut again before I plow. the ground is very level but bumpy, part of the reason we are plowing. plan on planting Christmas trees on part of it and maybe pumpkins for awhile on the rest.

No rocks in soil about 12" of topsoil with clay below. plan on turning it this fall and disking in the spring. how do you adjust the plow, didn't see any adjustments, will look again. it's an old beast. blades are rusty so I'll take a wire wheel to it. thanks for the help.

YES Which helps earth turn over uniformly.

Fine; no problem. The plow furrows will leave it bumpier. Disc Harrow will reduce the choppiness by half.

(Plowing across hills is an advanced plowing skill.)

Good, traditional time to plow. Winter frost will help break up the clods from plowing.

How do you adjust the plow, didn't see any adjustments, will look again.

WHEN THE RIGHT TRACTOR TIRE IS DOWN IN A PLOW FURROW, the plow must be level front to back and level left to right. You make adjustments with the Three Point Hitch Top Link and (right) Lifting Rod. Sounds easy but its not. Use a Torpedo Level; more certain than eyeballing.

Grease plowshare after use, Marine/Waterproof Grease preferable, to prevent rust. Keep under CANVAS tarpaulin, not plastic.

Open and read the link I sent you in Post #2, adjustment info is there.
