I’ve made a few mistakes that cost more than your $40 carb. Buying that carb wasn’t a mistake, it was a good way to eliminate something that could have been wrong. You always hear the phrase “don’t throw parts at it, figure out what is wrong”. Sometimes the best way is to throw parts at it, you can’t take a saw to Autozone and have them scan for codes.
