Old Wells - Part II

Fill it with broken concrete blocks and broken cement...Many construction outfits will deliver that sort of debris for free...Once its semi-full cover with a few feet of dirt and plan on adding dirt over then net couple of years...:D

When you get about 2 feet from the top buy enough fill dirt with the money you saved on the trash bill and fill it on up.>

:0

I wonder how many neighbors' wells have been ruined by this train of thought?
Groundwater doesn't abide by property lines.
Probably more than you can count on both hands.

Just fill it with water and throw some carp in. :D

Carp? Did you spell that wrong? If so, building an outhouse over it would not be a bad idea!:D

If you did mean carp, then maybe up that a little and put some giant goldfish in it and call it a coy pond!:p

broken block and brick sounds like a good idea. I agree you could probably get a truck load for next too nothing

I know you can or know somebody who did ever which way you want to look at it.
I put a bunch of busted up concrete [from an old side walk] down by the road and put a free sign on it.
It filled up the pick up of the guy who took it.

That's pretty scary looking.

Here in Michigan we have laws about plugging abandoned wells, which is primarily to prevent groundwater contamination. Might see what applies in your state. Contaminated groundwater is bad for everyone, and extremely difficult to fix. I would look at filling the well with CLEAN sand and rocks if the law doesn't require something else. I would be strongly inclined to fill the well and not just re-cap it. Concrete rubble wouldn't be the worst, but it probably won't be totally CLEAN and I'm not sure how all the lime in it might or might not affect the groundwater. Clean sand would be my #1 choice, plus whatever rocks you have lying around or can get cheaper than sand.

Accidental death or injury is another primary reason to fill abandoned wells.

N80,

First of all its time for you to drop the N80 and go get the D300. :D:D:D:D:D Then change your TBN name. :D:D:D

My FIL is retired from the DOT. Years ago when looking for land to buy we find a property with an open, uncovered hand dug well. Very scary. The FIL said that DOT required the well to be filled with concrete!

Last spring it cost me $75 per hour to run a dump truck that could bring in 15-16 tons. He was running ABC aka road base for me which I think cost around $10 per ton so say $225-250 per load if the truck can round trip in one hour.

That material and load works out to around 5 yards per truck load.

If you start asking dump truck owners, excavating companies, feed/farm stores, you might be able to find some dirt for little or no cost. The dirt we put on our yard after the house was built was free. Had to pay for the truck but the dirt was free.

How you get the fill to the well is another issue. :D

Later,
Dan
