Older Cadets Points Corrosion

Have had two Cadets (now a 782) since 1976.

75% time non starting is some almost invisible corriosion on the points.

I take off the cover, run some fine sandpaper (600-800) thru them, forcefully, and it usually starts.

Thinking of leaving the points cover off, happens so often.

Note that front screw for points cover must be in place even if cover is off, or crankcase pressure slowly covers everything with oil. Took me a while to figure this out.

Mike I'd say your storage shed must have a good amount of moisture in it if this is happening regularly.

Have you tried a new set of points and capacitor, the capacitor could be bad.

Hi,

Stored outside under carport, yes I'm sure that is part of the problem. Have put in new points, yes.

Not really using capacitor now, put in a transistorized system run by the points. At first thought the low value of current thru the points might be the problem but then remembered it was the same thing with the old system.

Just something to remember when it doesn't start and there is no spark. The points can even look pretty good and be new, but a little 800 grit paper fixes things up.

my old jd 210 had the same problem and i found that oil vapor was getting in to the points and insulating them

Oil vapor certainly is a problem around these points, thanks. Maybe I'll try some sealing.
