I got the owners manual and it states that optimum speed is 75 strokes per minute.

Alright, I've had a chance to bale several days now in good conditions, and I've been cranking out 100 bales an hour with the old blue bomb (Ford 532). This I can live with much better than what I was fighting with before.
I tweaked several things. First I discovered that a tucker finger was mis-adjusted on the right knotter, which alone saved me my fairly frequent knotting misfires. Then I found the knotter drive chain had a couple fractured links on the back side where it is hard to see, which I fixed, only to discover the bushing in the center of the drive sprocket was worn out allowing quite a bit of slack making all kinds of weirdness from inconsistent bale sizes to the chain running crooked. Tracked one of those down and got it replaced. Then the reel drive sprocket on the pickup with the spring teeth (which is connected to the other end of the drive chain that runs the knotters) was out of alignment due to the set screw being loose. So I got that aligned and tight and the pickup reel seemed to feed better and faster afterwards helping my forward speed.
Maybe I'm forgetting a couple other little things...but the long story short is that this all added up to a much better baling experience. I hope to go through tons of little stuff on this machine as a winter project. I've got another 30 acres or so to bale still this year, so I'll see how it does.
