Oliver 3 bottom rollover plow (Farmwithjunk, you still here?)

Been awhile since I've been here. but once again I am on the plow prowl. To bring everything back up to speed, a couple of years ago I bought and "restored" a Ford 102 series 2 bottom roll over plow. There's a picture of it in my posts on this site. I pulled it well with a 32 HP (25 pto) Kubota tractor. I have traded up on my tractor (exactly double the HP) and I want a three bottom plow. I think I should be able to pull one ok.
I found an Oliver that may fit the bill and I will try to post pics of it later but I want to see if I can get a good guessing game going as to what it is. You know model, year manufactured, all that sort of thing.
The plow is a cat II set up as an 18 inch plow but it has 16 inch shares and moldboards on it. the main body of the plow has holes to convert from an 18 inch plow to a 16 inch or a 14 inch plow. It is also convertible to a two bottom because the entire rear third of the plow can be unbolted right behind the second bottom. The plow is rolled by a cylinder mounted across the headstock and turns the plow by means of a chain. I think some of the international plows use a similar setup to turn. Anybody want to play?
I also wonder what the effect of having 16 inch moldboards set at 14 inches would have on the performance of the plow.

I don't know of many people with experience with these type rollover plows. I think they are used more in Europe.

I think the problem you might have with changing sizes is the frame. It should be set up for 18" centers between the bottoms. If you put smaller parts on it you would either have to narrow the frame accordingly or it would leave a space the was not covered between the bottoms.
Either way I don't think it's a big deal. The 14's and 16's were designed for older tractors with less drawbar pull. They work a bit more efficiently at shallow depths.

I "think" I have found out what plow I am looking at. It may be Oliver 6240 and yes, if you change the bottom parts you also move the entire bottom on the frame. It is adjustable that way like I said, holes already provided. When you move the bottoms to the narrower holes, it places them closer together. I was wondering how the plow would work set up with 14 inch spacings and running the 16 inch shares and moldboards. The shares can be cut if need be but reshaping (or resizing) the moldboards is a serious undertaking.

Some of the expensive European plows can adjust the width of cut on the fly, all the way from narrow cut of 12" up a wide cut of 20 inches. They don't change the bottom parts so I think it will be ok to use the 16 inch parts with the plow set up at 14".
BTW, the math says I can pull three 16's but I'm still gonna set it up as a 14 inch plow. That is of course if I can win the plow at the auction.

It should work just fine set up that way. The weight of a rollover may be a bit of a problem for balance, but nothing that adding some weight to the front of the tractor won't cure.

For those of us who have never plowed, will you explain how a rollover plow differs from others and its advantages and disadvantages?

When you finish plowing, the last row leaves a "dead furrow" that doesn't get filled in. For small areas like gardens the rollover allows you to eliminate one of those and still work in both directions. It's a minor advantage and saves some time.
The drawbacks are that it is a LOT heavier and is more expensive, almost double on both.

I found a lot of rollover plows, all the way from 1 bottom to 5 bottoms that seem to be a simple and well built plow. The problem is the fact that they are chinese made and getting one here would be a problem. Just do a search for "chinese rollover plow". This discussion is a repeat of a previous thread about people wanting small plows to use with thier tractors that are affordable.
Now about theis rollover deal...
I like 'em. It's the only reason I already have one and want another. Has nothing to do with need, only desire. They are fun to use for the stuff I do. If it was a job and I had to plow hundreds of acres, it probably wouldn't be fun anymore.
If I am able to get the 3 bottom, I "might" have a two bottom Ford to sell but that remains to be seen. I may keep the Ford, "just because". Milkman, your tractor pulls that plow nicely but my plow is just physically too large and heavy for a BX.
Jeff, I don't know what tractor you have but hey, maybe someday we can work a deal.

I have never had a 3 bottom Oliver roll over plow, however, I have changed the spacing configuration on Oliver 2 bottoms quite often and have not noticed any problem with the way they plow. I like the plow in your link. I would try to buy them, if they ever come through Ky sales. There is a good market for resell on rollovers. Ken Sweet

Thanks Ken. There are lots of plows in this area just sitting and turning to junk. Most farms here are under drip irrigation, (even mine) and deep breaking or ripping is a thing of the past. The problem is the fact that the farmers don't want to sell the plows or they are worn to nothing or they are just too big for guys like me. And a lot of times it's a combination of all three. I sure hope I can get the one I have found. It's in pretty good shape except that the cylinder is missing (easy to replace) and the chain is frozen. (also easy to replace). The headstock was also broken but it has been nicely repaired.
I've tried to buy this plow for several year but he old gentleman wasn't willing to sell. Only his passing has cause his farm and equipment to go up for auction. The general opinion around here is that no one will want the plow and I can get it at a very reasonable price. I am the only guy in my area that has a tractor suitable for the plow but you never know what reseller may come in and outbid me.

Well I won the plow. About $150 more than I wanted to pay but it was $450 less than I paid for my Ford. Now the adventure begins. Pictures soon.
