On buying used

I'm looking at some used 2008 bobcat ct230s with FELs.

They're rental units, with about 450 and 650 hrs respectively. New, they'd be asking about 22000. These are priced 19500 and 16000 respectively.

I know rentals have a habit of being used hard, and put away wet. Those asking prices seem high for being over 3 years old and the hours on them.

30hp (engine) Korean tractor--$22000 new? Way, way overpriced.
My 2008 Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine) with a 6-ft wide FEL cost about $17500 new.

That rental guy is trolling for suckers.

It's pretty hard to hurt a tractor. The prices do seem high though. Rental tractors are not run any harder than purchased tractors IMO. Either it will pull whatever you hook it to, or it will not. No way to really harm a tractor with the exception of drowning it.

The Bobcats seem to be nice tractors but I agree with the others those are high prices!

Seriously, some folks just don't care about other's property...or don't know enough when to back off.
However, I would think rental companies maintain their equipment reasonably well (can't rent nonfunctioning equipment).

Still, as the other guys wrote...prices are a bit high.

BTW, that doesn't mean I'm opposed to buying used...but you need to go about 5 year old machines to start seeing good deals.

Like I've said before, I spent 22 years in USAF Vehicle Maintenance; and let me tell you, having 3 shifts of young guys hopping on and off industrial tractors hauling Aerospace Ground Equipment on the flightline; or 1 or 2 shifts of civil engineers hopping on and off agricultural tractors doing roads and grounds work beats the holy **** out of a tractor fast. If I remember correctly, AF estimates tractor maximum life expectancies to be 13 to 15 years under those conditions. And what usually gets dumped on DRMO for disposal wouldn't even make a decent boat anchor.

Rentals might not be used that badly; but then again, the customers don't have to worry about non-judicial punishment for breaking them either.

I have only purchased two rentals, but have have good luck with both of them. Purchased my jd 6120 with 430 hrs on the clock, now over 2700 with no issues other than a starter, also purchased my ford 7740 as a rental with under 800 hrs on it, now is getting close to 7000 hrs. Now, I'll admit the 7740 is starting to show some age, but it is mechanically sound. The only problem we ever had with that was the linkage going from forward to reverse, which is a design flaw.

Used a few, never bought one...seen more then a few being operated and thinking "jeez! Glad that ain't my tractor!!!"

I have to give you that point. Mine did come from dealers that did leases, not something like a rental shop.

The size may also have something to do with it, smaller tractors (I would think) are more often used by weekenders that may not know how to operate it.

A rental unit can be a good or bad deal, you have to look it over like any other used equipment. I wouldn't pass on something just because it was a rental. In the last three years I have bought several pieces of rental equipment, a Bomag plate compactor, Hilti hammer drill and a PJ 14k dump trailer. Since 2008 and depending on your local economy lots of equipment has been sitting with few rentals, so there are some deals out there if you look around.

Not familar with the pricing on the Bobcat tractors as others here can provide better info.

some dealers turn over rental / lease units based on hours, or when they start costing them money. if by hours.. it's likely an average that they assume will start costing money, whether the individual machine has started declining or not.

in ag circles, it's common to lease units, and then they are sold by the dealer at lease end.

I've bought a nice 1 owner lease tractor before. got it for good $ and it was a good tractor.

Why not just go to tractorhouse.com and see what that model tractor is selling for ? try that or fastline.com ? then make the choises your looking for.
