Oil & Fuel On road diesel -vs- off-road diesel

When I bought my tractor, I asked the dealer the same question--"What's the difference?" His answer was "30cents a gallon". I'll bet it's more than that now........!!

As otheres have said , it is bassically the addition on a color additive. it is cheaper , but for the amt. of diesel i use it is not worth the hassel of finding it, and /or having to fill out paper work. a lot depends on where you are. At least that is how i understand it.

I have a fuel statation thats about 5 miles from my house and they stake it out once in a while to nab people putting off road in their trucks. Would hate to see the fine....
I wounder if their is a neautralizer for the dye? Just asking since my F-250 is gas and I would never break the law by say using a non approved CA fuel container /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The off road diesel has the red dye in it to distinguish it from on road diesel. The off road, or ag diesel, is the same except for that red dye, and of course the 70 cents a gallon cheaper it is than the on road diesel.

Now, as someone has said, the Law usually hit a sale barn and test the P/U truck tanks while a sale is going on. That red dye does NOT come out of your tank as soon as that tank full of off road diesel is used up and it can take months before it clears out. In the meantime, you'd test positive for using off road diesel in your on road vehicle, which equates to a $10,000.00 fine when caught with red dye in your tank.

Of course, with the on road diesel prices today, $10,000.00 isn't really that much, if you get to use a lot of off road diesel before you're caught!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, it's bad business to try and use any off road diesel in your on road vehicle...IF you get caught!

Living in Texas, I have the permit from the Comptroller's Office to buy off road diesel. A lot of places here won't sell it to you now without that permit.

This discussion had me wondering: I know of several people who put ATF in their fuel to help clean the injectors. ATF of course is red, and will no doubt make the diesel fuel turn red. Looks like it may be possible to be nailed for illegal fuel, when in fact it isn't.

Putting ATF in your fuel is worse than worthless.

ATF may be more expensive than on road diesel, but since the road tax hasn't been paid on it either, technically it is no more legal than off road diesel.

( ***Does anyone know the difference between on-road diesel and off-road diesel?
1*If I go to the gas station, I can only buy one kind of diesel fuel.
2*if I buy from a local oil company, I can buy either on-road diesel or off-road diesel
3*The off-road diesel is less expensive,
4*but you have to buy 100 gallons at a time.
5*I'm guessing maybe it's not as refined? does anyone know?
6*Does anyone use off-road diesel in their Kubotas? )
~~~~~~~~~
***they're both the same except for color.
1* That's cause there's only one kind.
2* It's still only one kind. You just get a choice of colors for the same thing.
3* Actually the price is the same for both - you just get to pay tax for taking out the dye.
4* You would still have to buy 100 gallons of on road just the same as having to buy 100 gallons of off road.
5* Adding the dye to the finished product has nothing to do with refining.
6* Everyone uses off road diesel in their tractor. Some just pay taxes on it while others do not.
This whole is matter a tax issue.
( Be careful about buying off-road diesel. Depending on the state you live in you may have to have a fuel tax exemption certificate on file with the state. In Texas, usually a dealer will not even sell you the fuel unless you sign a statement and provide your exemption number.
The difference in price is that you don't pay road use taxes on off-road diesel.
you know how tax collectors are when they think you have not paid the proper taxes.
Paying road tax on fuel you don't use on the road sure as heck hain't paying the proper TAX.
