On road safety

I've taken to the road a few times this year. My daughter lives a few miles from my house, and I have let her have the tractor when she needs it. I simply make the journey early on Sunday morning when I know I won't see more than half a dozen other vehicles between Point A and Point B. The morning air is refreshing.

Not much you can do with idiots on the road. When I am turning left with people behind, I will use a hand signal and turn signals. The JD 8530 & 9330, both have turn signals. When there is no on coming traffic, a couple of hundred feet prior to turning, I will drive the tractor and take up most of the on coming traffic lane, both preventing them from passing as well as forcing them to pay attention that I am serious about making a left turn.

With a much smaller compact tractor, and cars behind, assuming I can, it is much safer to pull off the road on the right side and wait for a safe clear moment. Just because the guy behind you is patient, another car for several vehicles back will always tray to be stupid.

I do a lot of roading. On some of the older ag tractors are amost hard to keep in your lane, there sterring has play to say the least.
Turn your bright head lights on. this gets attention quicker than not. Wear your seat belt incase you get clipped. At least you will stay in the seat that way.
I have found with any tractor stay closer to the yellow center line. I have many that get rude and try to hit me on the way back in front of me. (scary, can put stripes in my under wear) I do have big mirrors and there my best friend. When they start to pass I inch over closer to the center line but I do not touch it. this normaly gets ther attention and most of the time they pull completly into the other lane. I have found slight swerving is an attension getter. This makes them not to trust you. It does help.
I farther I stay away from the center line the more problems I have, people will pass any where and theres not much room between you. Does matter if any one is comeing at us or not. They act like your not suppose to be out there.
I have better luck in the dark. Untill they get close to me they have no idea how wide I am. They normally proceed with caution after dark.
I have always wanted to add a 1/4" x 2" flat bar 1' wider than the left side of the loader bucket. It would take off a bunch of car mirrors.

never had to drive a tractor on road. though know enough farmers around here. that when i come up behind someone tractor with implements on or large disc or like, multi hay wagons, etc... i will hit my flashers and pull dead center in middle of road. block traffic behind me. so the person in tractor or trying to pull 2 or 3 hay racks. or what not. can get around a turn or pass a bridge.

i am sure i piss some folks off by doing this in my little SUV. but it is give and take. folks generally pull over to let folks pass. when it is safe to do so.

there are way to many mail boxes, bad shoulders, guard rails, on coming traffic, bridges, ugly turns steep hills, etc.. that folks don't take into account when there in there vehicles.

trying to keep on or right at yellow line and avoiding the side obstacles can be a challenge in itself.

then again, when younger had a wreck directly in front of my house. lady going to fast, and ran right up into a pallet fork for round bails in middle of night. rammed the engine back into the front seat, and one of the forks tapped side of her knee i want to say. almost knocked the farmer off the tractor.

another person, going to court tommorw against for cattle running at large for the umph tine time, due to the person doesn't take care of anything equipment or, live stock, fence, or other wise or less ordered by court. has been in a few wrecks due to no lights or slow motion signs or like on anything.

((speaking of bar sticking out from left side of tractor, this is the one person the community around here tries to avoid meeting head on, due to something may fall off or actually be sticking out)) there have been actual accidents of this.

folks in vehicles are stupid!
