Buying Advice On the way to pick up a 2040, any reason to NOT buy??

hat is the standard transmission for that model, pretty much bullet proof. I have the same setup on my 820.

Thanks fellas! I couldn't hardly sleep last night like a kid at Christmas lol! The serial number puts it being made in '76, just like me ! I plan on going through it soon as possible and change fluids filters and screens and such. Problem is I can't go play with all that right now, I have to go play catch up at work since I took off yesterday to tractor shop hahaa! All well worth it though! I'm going to order the early decals and the emblem next week and I'd like to get a shop manual for it if I find a decent deal. Time to update the sig!

Hi-Low trans has a lever on the left side of the dash (looks just like the throttle on the right side) and a sticker showing a rabbit/turtle.

If the shift boots have cracks, they will let water into the trans, replace asap.

Thanks! I believe it will be something my grandkids can use if properly maintained. Thanks for the info on the other tranny too, they sound similar to the newer power reverser types. I'm glad this one is the low-tech reliable collar shift variety though.
I do need some bigger implements now, Main thing I need is a shredder, at least 6'. Any recommendations on what size I should go with?

Haha, well thanks. What can I say, it's possible. All I know is what I see. The gauges haven't been tampered with and everything is very tight, ball joints, steering and bearings have zero play,it has no leaks and no sludge anywhere under the caps and i crawled all over it. The guy who owned it has had it for the last 28 years and from what he told me and what I see, I'm pretty sure it's original or it would still be for sale.

Anyways thanks to all for the comments and good info! Love my "new" Deere!

Man I'm loving this tractor! It's nice to have a machine that is a little more substantial than the little kubota! I finally got the time to do the fluid and filter changes yesterday. The hydraulic oil was a little dark but I was glad to see no water at all in there. The screen did have some crud on it and the filter wasn't too bad. I went back with Hyguard and it seemed to quiet and smooth the hydraulics some. Seems like it is worth the extra money. I also replaced the fuel filter. It was probably past due, kinda dirty. I really like the glass filter though, it makes it easy to check on it. After a small adventure of not bleeding the lines right I finally figured it out and opened the top bleed screw on the injection pump and primed it back up then she fired off. Besides playing around with my 4' implements I really haven't been able to really work her yet! The wife's probably not quite ready to hear we need a new bush hog! Lol
