While your tractor and top mount is different than on my F series, the setup in the first pic has the top link connection very close to the position it is on my tractor. One thing I note is your 3pt links appear to be a lot longer than on mine. With tiller in place, the tiller is very close to the rear tires.
See no reason you couldn't use the setup like in the last pic. If you are going to keep the tiller rear mounted wheels on, it would be nice to have the tiller sitting with the correct tilt when tiller is lowered into position.
My tiller still has all the decals on it and gives dims for the various link lengths. When mounted properly the chain drive is not vert. The tines tuck in towards the tractor.
