One mad snake is out there...

My snake story is from about 30 years ago, when I was at the old pistol range in Newark, CA, long since gone.

They had just called the line safe and we were going up to post new targets, when a little, maybe 20" rattler slithered across my path about a step in front of me. I was wearing good high-top boots, so I stepped on him, trying for a point about 2" behind the head. Well, I got a place maybe 5" behind the head, and trapped him there.

He was raising his head as high as he could and turning around to try to bite me, but couldn't quite get all the way around.

But what do you do next? 20 pistols within 50', but the rangemaster would have your rear end if you picked one of them up to dispatch the snake.

I had a staple gun to post my target, so I bent over and stapled the snake to death.

I guess I'm pretty lucky here on my farm in NC. I've only seen several black snakes and let them go as they are not aggressive. I'm sure they may be a copperhead here and there but as a rule they are not aggressive here. My granddaddy always told me to leave those blacksnakes alone because if you have them it's not common to have copperheads. Don't know if that's true or not but they are all I've seen except for one nice king snake.

In my experience, there are two locations to kill snakes. Around the house and in the woods.

My dad used to tell me that you never have snakes in a hog pen because hogs will eat them. We had a hogpen behind two ponds. I never saw a snake there even though there were lots of water moccasins in the ponds. Eddie, it's too bad there is not an easy way to put a snake around your feeder when the hogs are there to check that theory. . . or have a pet pig you take with you when you go for a walk in the woods.;)

TxDon, I'm getting a mental picture in my mind of 15 people playing water volleyball in snake boots.:D

Glad you mentioned the cat and that he's OK. That was my 1st thought, what about the cat?

Jim, I heard the same thing when I was a kid, and maybe it's partially true, but I have my doubts. I think I was 13 when I caught a 4' snake in an abandoned barn. I grabbed it right behind the head so it couldn't bite me, and let it coil itself around my arm. I first used it to terrify an aunt and younger sister, but then decided to let the hogs kill it, so I turned it loose in the hog pen and all the hogs just ignored it. I finally killed it myself and measured it.

My grandfather used to dispatch rattlers with the shovel every so often. He'd use the shovel before the 22 pistol with snake shot he usually carried.

Jim, I believe that copperhead and his mate will be lying in wait for Don.

Don, like you, I've killed quite a few snakes with a garden hoe, but can't remember ever using the shovel.
