Its not the rightway, and its not the safe way, but my way when I get off my tractor with it running is to take both the gear shift and the high/low out of gear, then you would have to kick both of them to knock it into gear.

you learned a valueable lesson the hard way.never ever crank a tractor from the ground.because you can get hurt bad or killed.i always start tractors from the tractor seat.an never ever get off them running.because as your getting off you could knock the gearshift in gear.tractors are dangerious.

machines aren't any more dangerous than the owner/operator makes them.

the reason manufacturers have all these safety devices on these tractors is because many people suffer such a severe and often fatal case of RectalKranialInverzion as to be a menace to society and thereself.

Safety, safety, safety....have to be safe, but it is amazing how many of us, including myself get in a hurry and take shortcuts. I have been fortunate and have not had my tractor come out of gear. If I get off of it while it is running, I will set the brake and put the implements down.

Back problems....been there also. What usually causes them? For me again its I am in a hurry and either lefting something incorrectly or something that is way too heavy. It used to be only the lower back, but now it must be a bulging disc with the shoulder hurting. I don't wish back problems on anyone. It is amazing what your back controls........everything. I think I keep the manufacturer of Advil in business.

I have an older Nuffield tractor. The entire electrical system is inoperative (this means there is no nuetral safety) so I rigged a battery and starter button directly to the starter. I had fallen into the habit of putting it in nuetral and starting it from the ground. One day while troubleshooting a fuel problem I reached up and pushed the starter button to bump it over a little. I had neglected to put it in nuetral and the engine sprung to life (first time that ever happened). The rear wheel ran into my leg and up on my foot before the fuel problem I was working on killed it. It was a moment of pure panic.
I was lucky enough to have my wife there (usually she is not) and she drove and got my father in law who pushed the tractor off my foot with his truck. I don't know how long I would have been there had she not been present. I could have lost my foot to lack of circulation.
The morals of this story are; 1 Never start a tractor from the ground. 2 even if there are electrical safetys, don't trust them.

Okay, how on earth am I supposed to start the old John Deere 2 banger? I can't reach the flywheel from the seat. If you never threw a flywheel to start a tractor, you ain't never lived in the country.

Lived in the country my whole life. Never have done that one.:D Thank goodness for modern tractors. I have had to start different tractors from the ground that over the years(my old 4020 especially), it pays to double check everything before and to do nothing in a hurry. It seems like tractors that are hard to start will start on the first spin when they are in gear.

I hurt my back several years ago. It will be fine for months at a time and then "pop". I have had it take me from standing up down to my knees. It is terrible when a grown man has crawl back to the house because he can't find anything to get ahold of to pull himself up to walk. :( It wouldn't be so bad if the wife didn't think it was funny.
If you haven't every hurt your back, be thankful and be careful.

Wow, never had anything that bad. Once every couple years, my neck will pop and my chin nwill go to my chest and can't lift my head without pain. Try driving to the chiropractor like that.

After leaving the dairy farm and moving to the city after high school, I used to tell people things like throwing a flywheel and they almost wouldn't believe me. "There's no way you can start an engine like that." That's when I'd tell them that if you've never done that, you never lived in the country.

I have never threw a flywheel, but have you ever pulled a crank on a Twin City 21-32???? I have in lots of hours on them when I was a kid. As I always say
(bout a hundred years ago). The man my daddy and I worked for had 3 of them.
