One step closer to permanent wood heat ban in California?

A few years back I spoke with a lady in the Ontario Government (at Queens Park) to try and clarify some regulations concerning farm fuel storage. She could not understand why anyone would have a need to store large amounts of fuel. Just go to the gas station to fill up! I'm serious!

It's true. We should all live in Urban centres and maybe just have robots operating our farms.

Had a chuckle picturing a big tractor running triples, pulling in to fill up at a gas station in downtown Toronto.

Unfortunately for rural Canada and America, the ones calling the shots are for the most part clueless and/or have an opposing agenda.

This is one factor furthering the decline of domestic agriculture.

I wonder where common sense comes from, does it come the US Constitution, or is it genetic.

Maybe rule No.1 is, if one is wants to burn firewood, first see if you stand outside your house in the middle of the day and drain the main to make the bladder gladder, without someone seeing you, and/or exercise their Sec. amendment right, if you can it's ok to burn wood, I can so I'm all set. Or if one can stand outside in the middle of the night and do target shooting with out county Mounty stopping in, it's ok to have a outside wood boiler, it should fall under that big bad F word in the constitution. Everyone else should at least be allowed to have a wood gasification boiler inside or outside their house, from what little I know about them, they seam to burn real clean.

Just learned rental property is subject to escalated abatement and the abate when SOLD provision only applies to owner occupied homes.

Rentals must be abated by a target date of 2016.

So I'm looking at 9 chimneys minimum and as mentioned... some have never had a flame and others have tenants that don't do wood... so out of the 9 only one supplements with wood heat because that property is on acreage with easy access to wood and has a fireplace insert.

One more tidbit is the Air District wants to license all remaining wood burners which means on demand inspection, license cost and the real possibility requiring a written record of when used plus source/type of wood burned...

Plus the air district reserves the right to call preemptive burn bans in anticipation of possible adverse conditions.

Have you looked into the abatement requirements? Maybe this is a bit of wishful thinking, but it could be something as simple as bricking up the fireplace opening.

Regardless, you'll be able to pass the costs of abatement on in terms of rent or the sales price, won't you?

Just another nail in the California coffin, or at least the Bay Area counties...

For those of us who are lucky enough to live under King Lepage or in the (Live Free or Die) state, who don't know what (abatement) is, let me help you with that, abatement simply means, a bate ment for fishing, your welcome.

A pic of illegal contraband in California, and who ever had this firewood will be subject to a big fine, but I hope that it only applies today.

Thanks for the laugh... a little humor is always good.

As for passing on the cost it is doubtful in a strict sense... many jurisdictions here have rent control... it was not always this way.

Also, having a wood burning fireplace is a huge plus when selling since new home don't have them... can't see how taking one out would add value.

Perhaps we could get Cheech and Chong to do a 2015 re-boot of Up In Smoke ?

The updated plot centres on them smuggling firewood around California, hidden under bales of weed.

.....We're way past The Inmates Running the Asylum.........

Doesn't the decay of the same wood create just as much greenhouse gas? I thought burning wood was carbon neutral. So are these laws simply a nuisance issue?
